The Spanish fleet in the Philippines has been, for the most part, either captured or destroyed, and great danger to the commerce of the United States has been removed. Spain's power at sea on the Pacific is broken, and ere now Manilla, the capital of the Philippines, Is probably in possession of Commander Dewey and his marines The latest advices are to the effect that a joint attack by the fleet in with the insurgents on land was about to be' made. The remnant of the Spanish fleet could do little effective fighting, while the shore batteries with their antiquiated guns would soon fall before the attack. These silenced, Spanish sovereignty in the island would temporarily, at least, pass away, and Uncle Sam would be in possession of and the Spanish fleet at Manilla, commanded by Admiral Montejo, who is said to be the greatest fighter in the Spanish navy. Two engagements were fought, in both of which the Spanish were defeated. Though no statement has been made, the loss of life on tbe Spanish ships must have been heavy, aa it is known three of their ships were destroyed one burned, one sunk and another blown up the latter possibly by the explosion of a magazine caused by a torpedo. In the latter event the number drowned, in addition to those killed, would be heavy. Dispatches also state that a number of Spanish craft were scuttled to prevent their falling into the hands of Deweys men. Under cover of the night, the United States fleet forced the forts and took up positions in the bay and at daylight gave battle.
