Show 'page A4 Friday, March 7, Davis County Clipper 1997 Five strong nominations in Best Actor category l m ri m l Q-- i g.i ii ri i i i m Excellent Superb Critic 1 The English Patient. SsssssssssWoody Harrelson tor "The People vs. Larry Elynt." Geotlrey Rush for Shine and Billy Bob Thorton for Sling Blade For me, these five strong nominations separate into three sub categories: impersonations, interpretations and symbiosis. First, two quirky impersonations of living people. Woody Harrelson pomogra-phe- r portrays the morally-bereLarry Flynt and imitates him down to his obnoxious drawl. Geotlrey Rush pord d trays the pianist Duud Hellgott. mutating his free association constant flow of words. Harrelson really does a fine job of acting, worthy of a nomination But now personal opinion and politics get to play in the hum tor "Best choice. ft tongue-swallowin- g mentally-challenge- I 1 rrrrri ttt i i 1 rn 1 1 1 Fair 1 id Poor Flynt talk, the movie depicts him perfectly, warts and all Other media and my sell agree that Woody Larry And the Academy Award nominees for Best Actor are Tom Cruise for "Jerry MaGuire. Ralph lennes for i Good Fasxna Jones Movie i genius-touche- could never vote for Woody because I have too many problems with The People vs. Larry Flynt and its titular hero." To hear the real gives him loo much character (llynt's looks alone improve three-tol- d "The People vs Larry Flynt" almost comes across as a love story between Larry and his wile Althea, demented though it may be In real ite. Flynt had numerous other wives and children, many ot whom accuse hint ot sexual and physical abuse This is the kind of movie that should be made, if made at all. without the collaboration ot its title character so the real warts can be shown Geotlrey Rush's David Heltcott inportrayal resembles other Oscar-ning performances, such as Dustin Hodman in "Rainman" or Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump " Rush, hitherto unknown to the mainstream, nails down the mannerisms ot this truly intriguing character Rush has already won the Best Actor award in the Golden Gloves and the Screen Actors Guild honors. His fellow actors really respect his performance not only for playing the but also for combining acting with other talents. Rush does a lot ot his own piano playing just like ) mentally-challenge- d Holly Hunter did in her Oscar-- inning role in "The Piano. The movie is amazing and moving although I think this true life story has been a little Holly woodied as well. Riding on the wave ot the movie's seven Oscar nominations, the real David is startling his first American concert tour Isold out) which his former teachei Sir Frank Callaway (played in the movie by John Gielguld) thinks is more ot a "circus act." My second subcategory involves two eltective interpretations of fic- tional characters. As "Jerry MaGuire" Tom Cruise plays a cutthroat sports agent w ho grow s a conscience a character out of the mind of wnierdirector Cameron Crowe. In "The Fnglish Patient." Ralph Fiennes plays a status. He deserves this nod. Not even fellow hunk Mel Gibson got a Best Actor nomination Braveheart last year. time. his for his I could have seen winning perfor- mance as Hamlet. My third subcategory is symbiosis, meaning the performance is the indivisible combination of writing, which won Best Picture And then theres Ralph (pronounced Ray f). He is the anchor of one of the most beautiful movies I have seen in a long time. I've seen the movie twice and every time I even see the trailer running on TV, I start to cry. Minghella and Ondaatje have created such an amazing story set during World W ar II in Northern Africa and Italy. Their burned hero as translated by Fiennes has his predatory grace and burning blue eyes. Fiennes has somehow mastered being aloof and intense at the same lucky, he may surprise us. My prediction: Geoffrey Rush for Shine. My Pic: Billy Bob Thorton for Sling Blade. Next week: Best Actress acting, and directing Billy Bob Thornton is planting the seeds, threshing the wheat, and baking the bread m Sling Blade (reviewed two weeks ago in this column). His pord Karl Childers is trayal of so complete that it seems to surpass the fictional setting approaching documentary Karl stars in his own story. (Howard Stern just did it.) Sling Blade is Thornton's Citizen Kane. He may never reach this level slow-witte- of auteurship again.
