Viewmont edges in American Davis Legion action fifth, Davis scored a pair of runs. J.D. Buxton reached first after striking out on a pitch that got past the catcher. He reached third base on the errant throw to first. Buxton scored on an RBI single by Mark Watson John Conners. After 6--5 Sports Editor KAYSVILLE With the score tied at 5 apiece going into the seventh inning, Steve Jeppson doubled down the left field line to score pinch runner John Ball and give Viewmont a 5 victory over Davis. Viking pitcher Chad Cullimore held the Darts hitless through four innings in the Tuesday game, but Davis rallied for two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to tie the game. In the top of the seventh Josh Gold smacked a single and Ball came on to run. He reached second on a throwing error and then scooted home on the hit by Jeppson. Down 0 going into their half of the 6-- 5-- a balk, Jason Gardner singled to score Conners. The Darts struck again in the sixth. Tyler Talbot singled to left field and then Trevor Denhem ripped a double to the gap to score Talbot. Buxton singled in Denhem and then Ryan Willis smacked a double to bring home Buxton for the third run of the inning. Viewmont opened the scoring in the right-cent- er third. Leadoff hitter Cort Beckman walked, stole second, stole third and then came home when Drew Wight flew out to center field for an RBI sacrifice. The Vikings added two more in the fourth. Jeppson walked and then Brett Barkdull reached first after striking out. Jeppson and Bardull crossed the plate when Brian Beck singled up the middle. Viewmont extended its lead to 0 in the fourth. Brett Burningham walked and came home when Jeppson hit a shot down the right field line which rolled to the corner of the yard. Jeppson came home on an RBI single by Cullimore. Beckman ended up winning the game on the mound. He came on in the fifth to get the Vikes out of a jam, but allowed three runs in the sixth. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Clark of Davis walked, but Casey Hill grounded into a double play to end the game. (V). 5-- Viewmont 3rd; Bountiful upsets Skyline at Rec Leagues Firecracker Tourament SANDY The two entrants from the Clipper area in the 16th annual Wendys Firecracker Tournament gave good accounts of themselves with Bountiful pulling off the biggest upset of the tournament and Viewmont winning third place. Several area players were given awards with Rob Wintle of Viewmont winning the Most Inspirational Player award for his fine piching after coming back from a recent hernia operation. in eliminatWintle pitched a ing defending champion Skyline on the second day. He did so after having a hard line drive hit him in the back of the calf on the sixth pitch of the day. Jake Bodily of Bountiful, who pitched and defeated Skyline the first day in the biggest upset of the tournament, and who also pitched well in a later effort, was named the Best Pitcher of the Tournament. one-hitt- er Matt Oman, Greg Carr, and Nate Gold of Viewmon t were all named to the nine player All Star team. Bountiful opened the tournament with an 11-- 6 win over Skyline with Shaun Springer leading the way with three hits in four trips. Bodily pitched into the bottom of the fifth when he was relieved by Nate Weese. Nate Webster and Matt Davis each had two hits in the game. They then lost to Taylorsville 13-- 3 in a game which was much closer. In fact, the Braves were tied 3 after four but the eventual winners scored 10 in the next three to win going away. Wes Patterson, Weese, and Zach Jacobs all threw for the Braves with Patterson leading the offensive attack 3-- with a double and two singles. They were eliminated the next day in one of the better Lyed games of the tournament by Mt. View 1 with the winning 2-- run coming in the bottom of the sixth.
