Show Saturday, January 11,1997 Long-tim- A-- skiers enjoy local slopes e Over the Hill Gang visits the Park by Jim Powell SPECIAL TO THE RECORD Editors Note; Jim Powell has been siding since 1939 when Sun Valley first opened. He served in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during WWII and returned to work for Hughes Aircraft Company in systems engineering. Jim and his wife, Jacqueline, came to Park City in 1972 to assist his four children in operation the former Utah Coal and Lumber Restaurant. He skis every day I possibly can." Football, basketball, hockey and boxing are all contact sports. Tennis, volleyball, track and field are intensely competitive. Then there is the realm df defined sports sports that one plays alone or with a few others, not contacting so much as connecting. Skiing is such a sport. When one skis alone the connection is with the snow, the mountains, the lyric of the trail or with the inner spirit. Recently, I participated in the connection aspect. Craig Sanchez, head of the Park City Ski Area Mountain Host program, invited me to join the Over the Hill Gang that was visiting the Park City Ski Area Monday. From the name I assumed it would be a small group of seniors who managed to keep skiing in their declining years. Over 40 of the gang assembled behind Steeps at 9:30 a.m. to explore the mountain with the several Mountain Hosts that Sanchez had assigned. I put myself in the group hosted by Chris Dorsey. With little ado he took us up Payday down to Crescent and down to the Silverload on Claim Jumper. Along the way he was evaluating our ability, stopping frequently to point out old mine remnants and particular trails. I rode up the lift with Barbara Starr, the trip director and officer at the gangs office in Colorado Springs, Colo. They arrange many trips each year to resorts all over the world. The Gang has over 5,000 active members. For some reason they determined that one status at 50 achieved years. Their emblem is a version of Grant Woods American Gothic with skis replacing the pitchfork in the somber old geezers hand. You know, when you are in your mid 70s, 50 is not old at all. At any rate, Dorsey took us down Parleys Park, then over to the Pioneer Lift Snd down Comstock before lunch at Mid Mountain. After lunch we over-the-hi- ll The Park Record took the Pioneer lift to the Jupiter Access and back to Thaynes lift which he recommended highly because of the sparse crowd and fast trip to the top. I think our guide kept us moving in the morning chill without causing any of us to go beyond our limits. He had much information about the mountain so our time was spent with more than just sliding downhill. During lunch our table had a chance to compare notes. Irene Philipp originally of Riga, Latvia, now Dallas, Texas told me she learned to ski at the age of 61. John and Estelle Sleavin, of Tacoma, Wa. across the table con- - u loose after lunch. Diana Loycano of Quincy, Mass, joined our group. We skied Keystone, Prospector Face, Temptation, King Con and finished with a flourish down Silver Queen and Sidewinder. My new friends told me it was one of the best days of skiing they had had. A real compliment for our resort, as they had skied all over Europe, several places in Colorado. Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South America. At the end of the trail we stopped at Steeps for liquid refreshment before they had to catch their chartered bus for Salt Lake; they were to ski at Deer Valley on Tuesday, Brighton and Solitude on Wednesday and at Alta on Thursday. This group of capable skiers didnt wish to brag about their ability; they wanted to have fun. Do you suppose the Black group spent their time confronting the face of Jupiter and Scott's Bowl? We met Robert Cobb Jr., who lives on the Boston Waterfront, at Steeps. He had skied with us earlier. He and I had our first resort ski experience in 1936. He at Neshaba Valley near Littleton, Mass., I at Sun Valley, Idaho. He was pulled up some 40 feet of vertical by the worlds first overhead rope tow. I had the luxury of riding up over 300 feet of vertical in the world's first chairlift on Dollar Mountain. We both tried to ski with soft leather boots inserted in toe straps that ran through slots in long pine skis. The proper length was to reach up over your head and touch the tips of the upright skis. Those wonderful, yet unobtainable boots were $55. That would be like $800 to $1,000 today. The chair lift day ticket was $2. We would ski like mad to get at least 20 rides out of that investment. By not stopping for lunch it was possible to set a record of 28 to 30 rides. They each had been skiing for over 30 years. They have skied on nearby Mt. Rainier and Whistler in British Columbia. They remarked that the coastal skiing was chancy for weather, quite often having wet and heavy snow. Of course, Park City had its best foot forward with blue sky, little wind and crisp snow.
