In our town, there are mainly two areas where a large part of our children must cross busy streets to get to and from school. One place is Second West and Main Street and the other is Third North and State streets. The speed limit changes to 40 miles per hour at the intersection on Main Street and in the block preceding Third North and State Street, there is a school crossing sign followed by a 40 m.p.h. speed limit sign. I feel that 40 m.p.h. is too fast for areas where there are so many children trying to cross the street. Many concerned citizens met with the Salina City Council Monday night. The council informed us that since both of these roads are state highways, there was nothing directly they could do. They said they would make a request to the state for funds for crossing guards or a flashing 20 m.p.h. sign in both places. The council said they had contacted the state in years past on the matter and their requests had been turned down. I am not willing to let this be passed over by the state without letting them know how I feel. Maybe if enough of us wrote letters or made phone calls, they would know the Salina people will do anything to protect their children. We would like to thank for making Poppy Day a success, such as Gunnison and Richfield, where they have the flashing 20 m.p.h. signs. If you care to express your views1 on this matter, you can write, or call, James Naegle, State Dept, of Transportation-Safet- y Division, Salt Lake City, Ut. ; telephone: Please join me in this effort. 533-530- Janey Sorensen Salina, Utah u , ' .
