The crowd parted and watched breathlessly as James wandered past the chairs in the waiting room and headed down a hall, peering about him curiously as he took this first independent walk. Finally tiring of his wanderings, James turned back, sought out of his father, and headed for the exit. The joy of restoring a childs sight has affected everyone The day the bandages came off, Danece Fickelt, Dayis Surgery Center facility director, who was in the crowd of wijl- wishing observers, said as ler own eyes teared up, This makes me cry. You have to look every little place to find a miradle. Trefts pulled one off here. ; Subsequent visits for updates on eye exams revealed optic nerve damage that will prohibit normal vision for James. However, the improvement hes experienced is tremendous. He definitely is seeing better. Hes enjoying things like sunshine, and getting around on his own, Treft reported. Getting back to James presented a huge challenge. Treft had exhausted his time and resources on his initial trip to Tonga. He estimated it would take him close to a year to return, another year that James would spend in darkness. James gratitude is evident. Treft said that at a recent examination, James came up and gave me a great big hug. He stood on my shoes in his stocking feet, shook my hand and put his arms around me. Trefts story was made public through an article in the Lakeside Review in December. In that story Treft voiced the idea that perhaps donations could be collected to bring James and a parent to the states so that Treft could perform the surgery here. That caught the attention, and goodwill spirit, of Rotary Club Readers in Layton and Sandy. At an appointment a few days Through efforts on the part of both clubs, air fare for James and later, Treft got a good look at James cataracts. They looked his father, Afi Ilola, was collected. But it went well. na interested Several people crowded into and around Trcfis small examination room the following morning to witness the removal of James bandages, and a miracle. hoped-fo- r - There he is! exclaimed Treft as a small boy, led by his father, struggled down the walkway. Both were visibly weary from . their long flight James, unable to see or communicate, finally collapsed in a heap, while his father w.ipcd tears of relief from his eyes. He expressed through the Kimoanas his gratitude for Trefts efforts in making this a possibility. James held his face down after the bandages came off, grimacing at any light that came through his closed eyes. Afi, kneeling by the examining chair, lifted his sons head and asked in his native tongue if he could see. Tense moments passed as Treft struggled -- successful operation. His findings, though not as good as hed hoped for, were still encouraging. Treft discovered that James was bom with nerve damage to his eyes, something untreatable by surgery. That has limited his vision from birth; its something that couldnt have been made any better, he said. Because of his years of near darkness, James eyes also tended to rove independently of each other, a condition that Treft hopes will diminish. Nevertheless, removal of the cat- through an interpreter to determine if James could see. The difficulty was compounded by the fact that since birth, James has had other medical problems that have limited his abilities to communicate. But when Treft set a small stuffed dog in James lap, James response was unmistakable. He made barking sounds, then grinned and laughed. Cautiously touching the dog, James decided he was afraid of it and asked Afi to take it away. aracts did restore enough of James sight to enable him to do things he hadnt done in years. Treft next placed a package, wrapped in colorful balloon-covere- d paper, in James lap. James eventually removed the paper to find a picture book. Holding the book upside down and close to his face, James squinted at the pictures. He reached his hand out to take Treft's hand in thanks for the book. Treft, whose services were entirely donated, expressed his thanks to others whove helped. Im grateful for the community support weve had, for the Rotary Club bnnging him here, and my patients help, for the way the communitys shared their means and hearts. And for the help of the media to share this with the community.
