He enjoys helping his neighbors and being a friend to the children in the neighborhood. There is no greater hero than this man who has faced incredible adversity with courage, determination, service and a smile, said Kelly Cowser in a letter nominating Moffat for Kaysvilles Unsung Hero award. TRASH MAN: correspondent AYSVILLE-Ke- nt Moffat never once thought he would be named an Unsung He-rohis city or a grand marshal itva parade. All he wants to do is EeTp his neighbors and be a tliiUd to them. Moffat has always liked doing nice things for his neighbors, but hasnt always had the opportunity. Since he moved into his home, built especially for him by hip father, he has found ways to help his neighbors and be a friend to the children in the neighborhood. Although he spends most of his waking hours in his wheelchair, Moffat takes the large black garbage cans out to the curb each week and retrieves them after the garbage collector has come by. He not only takes his own cans to the curb, but those of everyone living on the block. He dons knee pads to protect his knees, wheels himself to the can andiips the can down to rest on fits knees while he rolls it to the Curb. If he has to make a turn he ' can hold it with one hand while maneuvering his chair with the - other hand. The cans have wheels on ; them so they go pretty good, ; toffat explained. ; If the streets are clean he even sees that the cans are taken to the curb during the winter months. . When I first moved in I was klways busy in the house so I didnt know there were quite a few kids in the neighborhood, Moffat said. I When he was outside one day, a young boy came to talk with him. Moffat gave him a granola ItO'Jrom his backpack, which is strapped to the back of his wheelchair. didnt have any candy with "me so I gave the boy a granola bar." I carry them so I can have a snack, he explained. "Tuesday afternoon the boy rode up on his bike and asked if I had anything for him. From then on, Moffat kept a supply of granola bars in his pack for the children. I have wonderful neighbors, 41 year-old. said the Moffat loves children and he 3s?mss music. About eight years ago, Moffat and his father were working on the roof of a church in California when he stepped on a nail and fell off the roof. When his dad found him he was lying on the ground unconscious. The accident left him with brain damage, blind in one eye and he lost the hearing in one car. And he is a paraplegic. He had a sense of humor before the accident and it has remained with him, said his mother, Norma Moffat of Bountiful. Moffat wears a small gold ring with the letters "CTR on it on the little finger of his right hand. He explains that the letters mean chose the right, and reminds him daily to make good choices in everything he does. There are small pictures of Jesus hanging in the rooms of his home among other reminders of his faith in Jesus Christ. Moffat is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints and attends church each week. I am grateful his love for the Lord is sull with him, said Norma Moffat A plaque hangs on a wall in the living room of his home. The plaque was given to him at the annual devotional as part of the July 4 celebration. The plaque reads: In appreciation of your selfless service to your friends and neighbors." According to his neighbor Kelly Cowser, His selfless service has won the hearts of children in the neighborhood. He is always sharing. Moffat faced many battles in his life. He wasnt expected to live for 24 hours after the accident and he spent three months in a coma.
