A California woman obtained duplicate titles to falsify the paperwork for the cars, the indict- ment seek driver who them in sports car CLEARFIELD - Police are searching for an unknown driver e who managed to police several times in a brand-nesports car early Wednesday. Clearfield Detective Sgt. Jim Schilling said a patrol officer attempted to pull over a suspicious vehicle around 4:30 a.m. at 133 N. Main Street. Schilling said instead of stopping, the Ford Mustang with temporary plates sped off, leading police on a chase with speeds exceeding 130 miles per hour. The chase took police into the Ogden area where they lost the suspect around Washington Bouout-rac- w said. Prosecutors said the operation was responsible for the sale of at least 753 vehicles with rolled-bac- k odometers in several states, 247 of them in Utah. Utah victims paid about $4,000 more than the cars were worth because of the difference in mileage, for a total loss of $988,000. It is typical for odometer fraud to cross state lines and have several participants, including someone to clean the title, said investigator Jim Erickson. Kathryn E. Landreth, U.S. attorney for Nevada, said Gaitin received a longer sentence than the ringleader of the conspiracy because he repeatedly lied to investigators about his levard. But the sports car later showed up on U.S. 89 in Davis County where Davis Sheriff deputies tried to pursue it but were also out-ruSchilling said they are not sure why the driver fled. Used car salesman sent back to prison NORTH SALT LAKE - A Davis County used car salesman has been sent to federal prison for rolling back the odometer on cars he was trying to sell, the state Tax Commission announced. Robert J. Gaitin, 47, Salt Lake City, had pleaded guilty to 16 counts of a federal indictment relating to the odometer fraud and was sentenced to 53 months in federal prison. His partner and John A. Mahler, 29, cooperated in the investigation and was sentenced to three years probation, the tax commission said in a news release Tuesday, March 17. The commission said that the indictment followed a 4 1 investigation by the Tax Commissions Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division, the U.S. Justice Department, the U.S. Postal Service and the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The case was prosecuted in the U.S. District Court for Nevada. The indictment states that Gaitin and Mahler purchased hundreds of cars from dealers in Southern California to be sold at their Mountain View Auto Sales in North Salt Lake City and paid son-in-la- ar late-mod- high-milea- ge Man pleads innocent to sex abuse charges FARMINGTON - Michael Doporto, who was released from prison last spring after a controversial Utah Supreme Court decision, has pleaded innocent to new charges of child sex abuse. Doporto now faces eight first degree felony counts, three of which were first filed in 7th District Court in Price. A judge there agreed to consolidate those with five counts in 2nd District Court in Farmington since the charges involve the same young victim. Doporto was arraigned by Judge Michael Allphin here on Monday, March 15. He is accused of aggravated sexual abuse of a young relative from 1984 to 1993 during at his home in Price, a family gathering in Kaysville and once on Christmas Day. Prosecutors say they filed the charges after Doporto allegedly dialed a wrong number in August and left a message on an answering machine saying: I love (the girl). I never raped her. I fondled her and stuff like that but I never raped her ... I got my problems, but give me a break. Doporto was freed last year after the high court overturned his 1993 conviction for allegedly girl. In sodomizing a its split decision, the Utah Supreme Court ruled the judge erred in allowing two other girls slee-pove- rs to testify that Doporto had abused them. He has been in jail on $100,000 bail since his January arrest on the new charges. Craig Barlow, an assistant attorney general, is prosecuting the case against Doporto. He had requested the consolidation of Carbon and Davis cases. Defense attorney Mary Corpo-ro- n said Doporto needs to be tested by an audiologist and fitted with a hearing aid before further court appearances. He has severe hearing loss, Corporon said. Judge Allphin scheduled an April 6 status hearing in the case. A trial date is expected to be set that day. Last month, the Utah Supreme Court changed the Rules of Evidence to make it easier for about defendants prior bad acts. In making the change, the court reversed the position it had taken in the Doporto case in April 1997. Rollover backs up traffic It was not until April of last year that the woman confronted her husband with the forgeries. Sorenson was arrested in Sacramento, Calif., last December and extradited to Utah. California authorities reported Sorenson, a computer programmer, was arrested making fake drivers licences and personal checks. Sorenson remains in the Davis County Jail on $10,000 bail. A preliminary hearing has been set for March 25. Bryant's Most Reliable Unit Ever! rollLAYTON - A single-ca- r over accident Monday, March 16, on Interstate 15 caused a traffic backup through Layton.
