Suzanne Wiggill of Layton knows just what its like. When her daughter Jessica, now 15, was a baby, Wiggill went to the University of Utah hospital to get a paternity blood test done. She was so shocked at the results that she refused to face the issue for 1 5 years. The blood test not only eliminated the man in question as the father, but it also eliminated her as the mother. .Although the hospital has destroyed all older records, Wiggill still has the original paper with the results. Either there was a switch at the hospital or a mistake with the blood test, said Wiggill. ''Wiggill wondered if the blood samples ccfiHJ have been mislabeled, but was told that her sample and the babys sample were the only ones drawn there on that day in 1982. For fifteen years Ive known this. I cant deal with this, said Wiggill. Now shes 15 years old. Im her mother. Ive raised her, and I just want to know the truth. Now Im not afraid of it. Its been a mentally tormenting thing for me. I would like some closure to this and meaning to this and why have I gone through such hell for this, she said. I wa'nt the truth, and then I dont have to think about it, and I will have to accept the truth. She's just been such a trooper, Wig- - What its all right. world. Ijust cant beginning. Ifinally have direction and purpose and I know what I went. - Suzanne Wiggill gill said of Jessica. She seems to be accepting this a lot belter than I am. Ive tried to protect Jessica. In her search for the truth, Wiggill recently turned to The Montel W'liliams Show for help. She called in w hen the show asked for people who wanted blood tests for a member of their family. Wiggill and her daughter Jessica went to New York to tape an appearance on The Montel Williams Show and came back with news that ended 1 5 years of worry and doubt. The show paid for DNA tests to be done. Wiggill and her daughter w ere sent to a clinic in Murray where they took throat cultures, which Wigg'll carefully watched them put in separate envelopes and label properly, with signatures and proper identification taken. The blood tests, that was kind of strange for me to do, said Jessica before going to New York for the taping. In a way I dont want to find out. In a way I do. Anxiety is there, said Jessica. Its just an exciting time. If it comes back negative, I find out who my other parents are. If it comes back positive, I can look for Youths to learn leadership skillls at 4-- LeaderMete H By Susan tanner holmes Slrlard Examiner correspondent J;ARMINGTON - Learning how to provide the building bhx-kneeded by todays youths to become tomorrows leaders is s the theme behind the 1998 Utah State 1 1 LeaderMete. Frozen Dough Creative Shortcuts, Food and I itncss for Kids, Candy Creations and much more. - my father. Its just an interesting situation. It depends on which way the tests show up as to which way we bounce. The show aired earlier this month and the results of the new blood tests were revealed. Wiggill, bracing herself for either answer, didnt at first hear Williams tell her that Jessica was her daughter. I wasn't sure what I was hearing, Wiggill said. I looked at him and I looked at Jessica, and this lady in the audience kept saying, 1 lug her, hug her! Then I heard him say, Thats right, I said your daughter. I grabbed her and hugged her - it re- ally became real. It was very touching. It was just such a relief. said Wiggill. At the time of the first blood tests in 1982, Wiggill was 21, young, confused and scared. She worried that if she pursued the reasons the test came up negative, she would lose her baby. They (the hospital) were more than happy to drop it, she said. I blocked it out, pushed it back. I was afraid to do anything, really, said Wiggill. For 15 years Wiggill wondered about the reasons the test could have been nega Registration is $40 per person, which covers materials, notebook, speakers and three meals. There arc registration discounts for volunteers committed to attend and participate in certain leadership training activities. Motel costs vary from $7 to $66 per room per night. The same look, little dark hair, the same weight, she just made a comment when she held her up, Wiggill said. After seeing the baby briefly alter birth, Wiggill didnt see her again until the next day. This baby looked different than the one I had seen, and didnt think much about it then. Another possibility she thought of is that the man thought to be the father had a brother, who looked a lot like him, take the blood test in another state. "I had always had a suspicion that the man I named as the father had his brother go in for him. Wiggill remembers that 15 years ago she could not positively identify that was the mans photo or signature on the papers for the blood test. "The signature on the picture was all wrong," she said. Now that Wiggill knows for sure Jessica is really her daughter, all the sadness has come out and the regret that she let this go on for so long unanswered. Now, its all right. My life is sweet and I feel good. All is well in my world. I just cant believe it. Life as I know it is over; this is my new beginning. I finally have direction and purpose and I know what I want, said Wiggill. Wiggill said Jessica is overwhelmed with happiness at the results, and now they both have total peace and joy when she calls her Mom. Are you at risk for heart disease?
