She thought of a way to make sure the children heard her directions and save her voice. A bull hom. The bull hom started as a nov-cit- y, but Ball says she'd be lost without it She can tell the children on the opposite side of the intersection at 1000 West and 300 North to wait for her, ask children to push the light change button, or remind older students who sometimes feel they don't need help getting across the street to hold their horses. Rail supervises hundreds of children daily at the intersection near Holt Llemcntary School. Besides a way to make safety directions heard, the bull hom has other uses. I sing Happy Birthday to each child on his birthday. I sing it into the bull hom until I cant see them anymore. They act like they don't like it, but I know they really do," said Ball. She also uses the hom to tell cars to slow down. As far back (300 B.C.), it was known that pregnancy was associated with increased back and pelvic pain. ; Throughout the centuries, physicians have searched for causes and cures to address this most distressing aspect of childbearing. T Recent research in Norway and Sweden has shown the magnitude of the problem. Researchers found that up to half of all women have back pain during, and about 10 percent have pain that last beyond delivery, sometimes for years. ; With such a large percentage of women suffering this condition, many physicians and researchers are investigating ways to help correct this painful malady. Simple lower back pain during pregnancy is probably due to the abnormal weight distribution caused by the forward position of the uterus and baby. This puts a strain on lower , back vertebrae, supporting ligaments, and muscles. h Control of posture is very important to counter this abnormal strain on the back. Supporting braces are available to help. The physical condition of the mother prior to pregnancy is important, as is some form of ! regular exercise. T Good muscle conditioning is important to help the lower back counteract the effects of the forward position of the uterus and baby. ; Pregnancy can also worsen the pain of a back problem. These types of lower back pain usually respond to rest, exer-, cise and special back supports. Of course, medications must be used with caution during pregnancy because of the potential risk to , the baby. 1 Occasionally, a woman can have a herniated or ruptured disk that causes pain in the leg and sometimes the foot. Serious conditions of the back make treatment difficult because of the pregnancy. Surgery is only attempted in pre-existi- ng Davis Health today the most serious cases. The most common cause of back and pelvic pain during pregnancy is problems with the pelvic joints, specifically the sacroiliac joint. This condition is usually caused by two factors. First, the female pelvis must function as both a mechanical element of the body. Second, the forces and hormones during pregnancy weaken her system. The pelvis is formed from three bones and three joints. The bones are the two ilium and the sacrum. The joints are the two sacroiliac joints on either side of the sacrum and the pubic joint in the front. The female pelvis is more delicate and unstable than that of the male, and its supporting ligaments are also smaller and more prone to injury. During pregnancy women produce a hormone called relaxin that they make at no other time in their lives. This hormone causes a relaxation or softening of the pelvic ligaments, thereby earning its name. Relaxin is produced early in pregnancy and could account for the back pain experienced by women in the first three months of pregnancy, long before there is significant pelvic stress from a large uterus pressing down into the pelvis. As pregnancy progresses, the weight of the fetus causes the uterus to act as a wedge that tries to pry apart the pelvic joints. This is thought to be the cause for much of the back pain experienced with pregnancy. The situation worsens with actual childbirth when the baby is expelled through the pelvis and forces the three bones that make up the pelvis to spread apart. Spreading apart of the softened ligaments and pelvic joints causes the birth canal to expand. This is no doubt good for the baby, as the passage through the birth canal is made easier. The mother, however, can suffer because of this pelvic spreading. Pain caused by Aaron V. Barson, Jr. Dr. Paracelsus Davis Hospital and Medical Center spreading and abnormal motion in the pelvic joints is usually localized in the very low back, several inches below the belt line. The pain is usually more to one side (usually the right) and feels like a deep ache, but may be very sharp with certain motions. The pain can radiate into the buttocks, groin, back of the leg and occasionally along the side or back of the calf and ankle. Pain can worsen by certain twisting or bending motions. The most common activities causing pain (from a large Swedish study) are: 1 marital relations, 2 standing and or sitting for 30 minutes, 3 lying in bed through the night, 4 getting up from a chair, 5 vacuuming, sweeping, running and dancing, 6 twisting, bending and carrying a child. A dependable sign of painful sacroiliac joints is the stress test. For this home test, the woman lies on her back on a floor and bends one knee straight toward the ceiling. Another person then presses straight down on her knee with about 20 pounds of force, thereby stressing the sacroiliac joint on that side. The test is repeated on the other side. Pain cause by this home test indicates the presence of a sprained or weakened sacroiliac joint. Treatment of this condition involves avoiding motions or activities that cause pain. Simple home manipulations for the sacroiliac joint can be taught and are frequently effective. A special sacroiliac brace or belt can help stabilize the joint during pregnancy, but See BACK7 The birthday party is April 28 at 11:30 a.m. The Joys of Good Teeth Mill he prevented April 30 at 11:4$ a.m. Roy Thompson of Climon entertains each Monday from 1 1 to 1 1:30 a.m. on the piano.
