Although the Lions rolled up more yardage, fumbles consistantly hurt the Lions and eventually meant the downfall for Payson as the Lions fumbled and lost 6 times and Judge only lost 1 fumble. The game was a fierce defensive battle from the start and both teams did their share of punting. The Judge Bulldogs punted 6 times and the Lions 3 times. The Lions received the opening kickoff and Gary Weight returned the ball to the Payson 32. The Lions were unable to move the ball on the first set of downs and Joel Crouch punted to the Judge 35. The Judge Bulldogs began a short drive as quarterback Gary Barber picked up 7 yards before Kevin Barnett knocked him out of bounds. A play later and only a foot to go for a first down Judge ran up the middle and just barely got the foot they needed as Barnett and Tom Horn made the tackle. On first down Barber pitched out to Dave Dudley and Dudley got 3 yards before Mark Etherington stopped him. Or. second down Dave Saaler broke open to the Lion 43 and Judge had their second first down. Here the drive stalled and on fourth down Judge attempted a field goal by Ross Caputo who had kicked one over 60 yards in another game. This attempt came from the 41 and the kick was short. The Lions now took over on their 20 and ran Mark Etherington for 3 yards. Mike Daley then broke through a hole to the Lion 35 and a first down. The Lions and Bulldogs both had their problems moving the ball throughout the day and Payson was halted agai;u Crouch punted to Barber who was knocked down at the Bulldog 28. Shortly after the first quarter ended with the score 0. The ball continued to change hands in the second quarter with no sustained drives until Judge received a breri.about midway through the quarter. The Lions had first down at the Lion 25. Mark Etherington carried to the 29 and Gary Weight picked up 7 yards for a first down at the 36. The nevt play saw Mark Etherington fumble and Rick ORiley of Judge recovered at the Lion 32. First down for Judge saw Ross Caputo ire a pass over the middle to Gary Barber on the 38. A grabbing the face mask penalty against the Lions put the ball on the 13 and a first down for Judge. Judge was held back by the Lion defense and Caputo who quarterbacked and kicked as well, booted a field goal from the 27 and the score stood Judge 3 and Payson 0. The next score by Judge came quickly as the kickoff by Caputo went to Brad Olson who pitched to Terry Carter. Carter fumbled but recovered at the 1 yard line of Payson. Crouch tried a quarterback keeper and fumbled at the 2 where Dave Sadler recovered for Judge. Sadler then picked up a yard on first down and Gary Barber scored around left end. Caputo s kick was good and the score was Judge 10 and Payson 0. On Caputo s kickoff Gary Weight made a mental error as the ball bounced to him with Judge coming fast. He let the baU ground as Judge recovered at the Lion 13. Judge might have gone right in for another score but Gary Barber threw over the middle and Joe Quigley intercepted ending the threat. The half now ended with the score Judge 10 and Payson 0. The third quarter saw the Lions looking like a different team as the Lions carried the action to Judge in the third quarter. The Bulldogs returned the second half opening kickoff to the Judge 31. The Payson defense on fine plays by Kay Riley, Jim Durrant and Gary Weight and a clipping penalty against Judge put the ball on the Judge 16. Caputo punted and Brad Olson returned to the Payson 37. Dick Armstrong opened a big hole and went clear to the Judge 30 on first down. Etherington now moved 4 yards to the 26 and Armstrong picked up 6 to the 20 for another first down. The Lions continued to move as Etherington moved to the 13 and again Armstrong picked up 4 to the 9 for another Lion first down. On the next play the Lions lost the ball again as Etherington fumbled and Barber recovered at the Judge 6. Judge wasted no time in getting the baU away from their end zone and moved the ball out to their 26 but then the Lions As usual, sports fans supported the Sportsmen are reminded that their current hunting and fishing licenses-remaivalid until April 15, 1971. The Lions had a few bad breaks finally received a break as Judge fumbled and Jeff Peery recovered the ball at the Judge 30. The Lions could not capitalize as Brad Olson threw the halfback option pass to Terry Carter and it was intercepted by Judge. The Lions were not to be denied and held Judge again as Caputo again punted to Chad Smith who returned to the Judge 31. Armstrong moved for 3 yards to the 28 and a grabbing the face mask penalty against the Bulldogs putthebaUon the Judge 13. Mike Daley now picked up 5 yards to the 8 as the third quarter ended with the score still Judge 10 and Payson 0. The fourth quarter opened with Gary Weight moving down to the 4 and Mike Daley followed by carrying to the 2. Daley scored on the next play through the right side of the line and with 10:58 left in the game it looked like the Lions might still have a chance. The Lions went for a two point coversion which was not good and the score stood Judge 10 and Payson 6. Judge came right back as Gary Barber led Judge down the field witi a fine 30 yard run and got deep into Payson territory at the 15 before the Lions stiffened. First Riley dropped Sadler for a 5 yard loss and then Etherington caught Barber for another 5 yard loss. A holding penalty against Judge then put the ball aU the way back to the Payson 41 bringing up second and about 35 to go for a first down. Terry Carter caught Barber after a 1 yard gain and on third down Caputo threw long. Mark Etherington intercepted at the Pay-so- n 8. The Lions lost the ball again on the snap from center as a mixup occurred and Judge recovered. The Payson defense again stiffened and got the baU back on their 24. With time running out Crouch tried to pass but was dropped for a loss back to the 17 and a delay of game penalty followed. The Lions were now back on their 12. On fourth down and everyone expecting a pass the Lions tried a double reverse to Etherington and he got out to the 31 but it wasnt enough for a first down and Judge took over.
