According to the Associated Press Stylebook the bible of journalistic writing rules coach is “lower case in all not a formal title” It then diuses as a job description rects you to the mam section where there is page upon the proper capitalisation of of minutiae regarding pace titles Of ay it isn't page upon page but there is a lot to read you want to understand whether or not to capitalize "chief monkey trainer" (you shouldn't by the way) or “associate pooper scoopei" (that one's lowercase too) Hut back to coaches The issue arose as was writing induction into the a recent article on Wilbur Braithwaite’s Mall ol ame he problem was mostly mine because of the legend I couldn't force myself that surrounds W ilbui Braithwaitc to lowercase the "coach" preceding “Braithwaite" It didn’t seem to jive very well with people’s respect and love when they speak of the man had found a loophole to enable me to capithought found this: “Capitalize formal talize “coach” when is’ one that denotes a formal title titles a scope of authority professional activity or academic accomplishment” as remember back to the first time I met Certainly Wilbur when was very young “scope of authority” describes it pretty well Ol couise it could have been that I was (and still am) seated of his safari hat ISul it's more tfian that too So I looked to the “Coach---person who trains an athlete or team of athletes 'In give instruction or advice in the capacity of a coach’’ W'hat of all Wilbur’s instruction and advice to players outside the classroom or off the courts? Cer 01 students tainly his willingness to listen and offer his time and wisdom is as much a pait ol who he is as his athletic prowess or some coaching is what they do It is a job ! : J home win over instructing for proper form on a serve helping a player through private struggles or offering career advice to former students coaching permeates every facet of Wilbur’s life I’ll admit don’t know Wilbur that well He never siruclcd me in the finer points of the overhand serve or how to rush the net never took a math class from him But know how people speak of him And I know what he has given to our communities And I know that when I have had occasion to be around him have had the feeling that was in the presence not of greatness — Wilbur is too humble for that— but of a man with great integrity hondedication and humility esty sportsmanship Wilbur never coached He iv a coach in everything he does through and through Anyway eventually found my answer as to whether or not capitalize coach 1 he AP Stylebook says to capitalize titles of nobility And at least as far as Wilbur Braithwaitc is concerned “coach” has certainly become a noble title So this one's lor you Coach Braithwaite
