How could we improve on that? It would be like ‘gilding the lily’ The flowers ate begun in flats either from seed or starts in the greenhouse behind the temple parking lot beginning with geraniums the first of January and ending with marigolds and zinnias in April People in the community are sometimes distressed when they see "perfectly good” plants moved from the beds to make rixim for new ones Lindsay explains that they try to replace seasonal plants just before they fade while they are still beautiful so that the gardens are always at their best Also new plants are not held beyond the time they are ready to be put in the ground T his requires meticulous timing Lindsay keeps detailed records of all plantings with dates including comments and observations Kach year Lindsay likes to introduce new plants into the mix This summer he is particularly pleased with the effect of the pink purple and white Iysianthus which emphasizes the color scheme in the bed below the main temple entrance Lindsay usually adds a surprise or two in the plantings every year This year they planted a variety of flowers in the long bed on the south side of the temple including about 1400 zinnias But the zinnias were so hillside that flows from the temple down to the highway entrance to the city has been planted w ith ov er 5000 daffodil bulbs for naturalization Lindsay plans each year’s plantings well before the current year is finished Plants are carefully chosen for their compatibility with the arid climate and the short growing season in Sanpete County He plans each bed for particular color schemes He must take into consideration each plant’s blooming penod The happy there that they overwhelmed most of the other flowers Now this wide bed is almost filled with these blooms and only a few California poppies and others arc peeping through The heavy clay soil common to this area requires constant care and monitoring The soil in the flowerbeds is carefully amended with and other such mulches and the moisture content throughout the grounds is measured many times a week to color pattern changes insure adequate watering ) in a T he pageant lull especially is carefully monitored throughout the pageant to insure that the crowds do not impact the landscaping tix heavily Lindsay said that the ram that fell on the first Thursday of the peiformnncc this year was helpful in returning the lawn to a healthy state The temple grounds have water souices including Temple Springs which is owned by the LDS church and has supplied w ater to the temple since the eaily 1920s The grounds ate usually wateied thiee
