Do they have any suggestions for the concerns may have with my kids or husband? You can get a lot of great ideas over a sink of dirty dishes This column is the product of Lori ’s rambling and often disjointed thoughts This conversational style piece does not reflect the opinion of this newspaper in the beginning Thanksgiving by Cindy Andreason Since Thanksgiving is celebrated tomorrow November 28 I'd like to share a little historical trivia with you about the holiday The first Thanksgiving Day celebrated in America went something like this: The Pilgrims had been in the New World for nearly a year The springtime sowing had taken place and all summer the fields had been watched with great anxiety for all knew that their lives depended upon the coming harvest The summer crops came to a richness of fruition beyond all expectation Late one day in the fall Governor Bradford sent four men into the forests to shoot wild birds “We will hold a harvest feast he said They of Thanksgiving” vited the Indians who had been friendly to the strangers to rejoice with the white men The Indians came bearing gifts of venison and the harvest feast lasted three days General Washington perfectly expressed the spirit of the day in his Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1789: “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God to obey His will to be grateful for His benefits and humbly to implore His protection aid and do recNow therefore favors ommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the people of these States to The holiday season brings a barrage of advertisements for toys and other gifts aimed at children While advertising can provide children with a great deal of information about various products parents should also keep in mind that children need to be educated about the many facts of advertising The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus recommends that parents help their children to understand and evaluate advertising and offers the following tips: Talk to very young children about the general concept of advertising Children should know that the purpose of advertising is to get people interested in buying products not to entertain the viewer or reader Talk about the ways in which the product is made attractive of the television screen Your child should learn that advertising gives them some but not all of the information needed to make informed choices Help your child to understand that product information does not come from advertising exclusively and that a commercial is only an “introduction” not the whole story Teach your child to investigate products before making a decision about a purchase The best way to do this is to lead through personal example Involve your child in the decisions about family purchases from clothing to appliances Let your child see how you weigh the relative merits of particular brands Help your child in making similar decisions when it comes to even minor toy and entertainment purchases Watch television with your child and urge him or her to discuss and think critically about what they are seeing When viewing commercials talk about the various elements which might be confusing or misleading After watching a commercial do a “reality check” to help your child distinguish between reality and fantasy If you have a complaint about children’s advertising that’s local in ture contact your local Better Business Bureau To report a complaint about national advertising send your complaint in writing to the Children's Advertising Review Unit 845 Third Avenue New York NY 10022 When writing to CARU be specific about where and when you saw or heard the advertising If it is a printed ad send the original with your letter To purchase a copy of “A Parent’s Guide: has produced a beautiful piece that may add to the familiness of your Thanksgiving What’s the value of discussing values? is a discussion guide for families that has been distributed this week through the schools This pamphlet may be a great start to a worthwhile family discussion We can rekindle the flame of family values and rekindle the importance of Thanksgiving This family holiday doesn't need to be a spring board for Christmas Our Thanksgiving traditions can give our kids a sense of identity and belonging We can make consistencies in an often inconsistent world We can make traditions that will build happy memories and help shape positive family community and individual values Take time for your kids Read the family a story Play a family game of basketball or foursquare Take a family walk and discuss your many blessings Set aside family differences or squabbles for the holidays Mend bad feelings and apologize for harsh words the service of that great and glorious Being who is the Beneficent Author of all the good that was that is or that will be that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country and for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us” In 864 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation appointing the fourth Thursday in November thereafter as a national Thanksgiving Day This rule nearly passed out of existence after Lincoln was assassinated but succeeding presidents took it up and since then Thanksgiving Day has been regularly observed throughout the United States In the early LVes turkeys were trailed like cattle in “drives" to supply food where needed One of the earliest turkey drives was over the Sierras from California to Carson City Nevada Hungry miners coughed up $5 apiece for the birds “Kids today don’t respect authority don’t care about their families and don't care about doing well in school” This was a common refrain in the 50s and 60s when the Baby Boom generation was growing up And it’s equally true now of Boomers' children At least that’s what those who know today’s elementary' and grandchildren and high school students about them An unsettling portrait emerges from a recent study conducted by Horace Mann Educators Corporation in which teachers bom between 1946 and 1964 compared the attitudes of their peers when they were students with today’s “Generation Y” students The study paints today’s children and teens as pessimistic cynical materialistic and competitive and lacking in religious faith and persistence But the news is not all bad Teachers also said that today's youth are more tolerant and accepting of ethnic and cultural differences among people exhibit less racial prejudice and are more likely to express their opinions than were Baby Boomers at a comparable age The teachers pointed to many key differences in the attitudes and behavior of Generation Y’ers and schoolage Baby Boomers: Spending time with family members was viewed as important to 66 of Baby of Boomers when teachers were in school but important to only 3 today’s students Strong religious faith was important to 59 of Baby Boom students comof students today and pared to only 19 of Baby Boomers when Performing well in school was important to 83 they were students compared to only 37 of Generation Y'ers The study also revealed that 41 of teachers feel that today’s students are far less optimistic about their future compared to Baby Boom students By of the teachers feel that today's students are more opcomparison only 2 timistic And though nearly half (47) of the teachers who participated in the study said their students are more aware of political issues than were Baby Boomers as students this awareness apparently does not translate into activism Only 22 of the teachers said that being active in a social political or other cause outside of school was important to Generation Y students The teachers also pointed to several positive attributes exhibited by Y students including: strong majority of teachers (74) feel that today's students are more accepting of ethnic and cultural differences among people than the teachers' when they were in school A slight majority of all teachers (57) were peers believe that Generation Y students exhibit less racial prejudice compared to students when Baby Boomers were in school and percent feel that Generation Y students are more likely to express their opinions and ask A Charitable giving guides available This week more
