The theory that a race of giant men once inhabited the San Joaquin valley, advanced by Dr. J. Kroeck, professor of biology at the College of the Pacific, now is supported by new evidence. Two railway employees, Frank Fesr-rar- a and Earl Cusilidge, have revealed the discovery of a cavern in Calaveras county littered with the remains of more than 200 skeletons, the bones of which are of nnusual size. Fesrrara and Cusilidge said that skulls found In the cavern were much larger than those of the present day race. They said that Jaw bones were twice the size of a normal mans and that rib formations were nearly the size of a steers. The men noted one peculiar thing that leg bones were much smaller than those of the man of today. Doctor Kroeck believes that bones of the "giants" and those of a race of diminutives have become mixed. Giants Were Artisans. That the ancient people, no matter what their stature was, were accomplished artisans. Is proven by a stone bowl discovered In the cavern. The bowl Is of granite, five Indies In depth and 14 inches in diameter, and Is said to be far superior in workmanship to any of the known Indian tribes. Doctor Kroeck cannot explain how the bones were preserved, for they apparently date back to the time when this section of California was the coast line, judging from shell fish remains found with them. Fesrrara and Cusilidge were hunting when they discovered the cavern. They came across a small hole In the side of a hill. Dropping a pebble In the opening they found It took eight seconds to hit the bottom. Four Hundred Foot Chamber. Later they returned to the hole, bringing with them a long length of rope. They widened the opening and lowered themselves to a point approximately GO feet underground. There they found a great chamber, 400 foot In length and nearly 200 feet In width. Using flashlights the men explored the cavern and discovered numerous of the bones. They found another cavern, 150 feet below the first one. This they also explored and there again they found evidence of a race of giants. MISSION with MIGLIACCIO & his Chicago Hotel EVERY SATURDAY. RALPH Orchestra era exi-t- s at touched. FINDS OXYGEN IS REALLY TRIPLETS New Facts Discovered Study of Light by Berkeley, Calif. Oxygen, the gas which constitutes a fifth of the air we breathe, and which is essential tv our life, Is really triplets. It is not twins, as was recently suggested, or single, as it was thought for many years. This has been discovered here hv two University of California exi Irof. Y. F. Giauque and II. L. Johnstone. They have found that oxygen In the air consists not only of the element with atomic weight of sixteen but that there are small numbers of heavier atoms. Some weigh seventeen and others weigh eighteen. These make up forms of oxygen whirl) are like ordinary oxygen in all respects except arfcnic weight, and are called isotopes of oxygen. Many other elements, notably lead, have been found to have iso topes, chemically similar, but of different atomic weight. The investigators have discovered tlIs fact from a study of the way light is absorbed as it passes through t thick layer of air, as with sunlight in the late afternoon. The oxygen absorbs certain wave lengths of light, and from these Professor Giauque and Mr. Johnstone have calculated t' weight of the atoms that produce the effect Recently they found that some of the oxygen molecules were made of an atom of weight sixteen combined, With one of weight eighteen. Since they announced tiiis they have dis-- j covered the presence of the third isotope, so that there Is still a third kind of oxygene molecule, consisting of an atom of weight sixteen combined wiih one of weight seventeen. However, the atoms of weight sixteen must be in the vast majority, and the typical molecule must con-- j sist of a pair of atoms of weight six-teen, as ttie atomic weight of ordinary oxygen has been determined to be sixteen with great precision. Any great amount of the other Isotopes would make the average atomic weight of oxygen appreciably greater than this figure. 1 Watch For Bathing Girl Review. |
