be held Monday Dec 17 at 6 pm in the County Courthouse or The budget has two basic parts revenues or income and expenditures outgo Revenues come from sources such as taxes fees service charges and payments from other agencies Among the expenditures are staff salanes supplies and the construction and maintenance of facilities The General Fund is the largest and one of the most important of the county’s funds because it wholly or partially finances most of its governmental programs The budget shows what has been allocated for each activity of the county The actual cost may vary within the programs but may not exceed the budgeted amount unless approved at an advertised budget hearing or office Any questions regarding the budget for a particular department should be addressed to the 91 No 23 December 13 2001 house at public meeting By Kathy Walker Tempers flared at times as private property owners and livestock operators voiced their opinions of a proordinance at a pubposed fencing-olic heanng Monday Dec 10 in the County Courthouse in Fillmore A snow storm did not prevent 63 residents and residents from attending the hearing but kept others away Several of those faxed statements to the County Commission the proposed ordinance regarding and their comments were entered as public record Commissioner Cox stated at the beginning of the meeting that he could not personally support the proposed ordinance as written “The proposed ordinance w as as directed by the County Commission The verbiage used is the same as the current ordinance except in reverse for private property owners The ordinance was created as a basis for discussion opposite ends of the pole so to speak It was never intended as the final product” said County Attorney LeRay Jackson About people spoke at the meeting Some were pnvate property owners Others were livestock operators Opinions varied Some residents were in favor of adopting the posal Others were against the nance and still others wanted a proordicom- promise Under the proposed fencing-ou- t ordinance private property owners w ith land adjacent to or surrounded by public land w ill be responsible for keeping livestock representatives from both sides of the issue Committee members have not yet been chosen by the Commission “The appointed committee w ill work to formulate a new ordinance that is acceptable to resident) SeaFirst Class Phil Averett was wounded by shrapnel in the attack Averett said the ship was in a “water tight integrity" (all doors and hatches sealed) and he was unable to leave his gun turret It was after night fell that the ship opened up and Averett was able to get medical help in the ship’s sick bay Averett’s medical report reads “Patient received shrapnel wound of right scapular region as man result of explosion of his gun mount during action against enemy planes Wound debrided shrapnel removed Packed with sulfa powder and comers closed with braided silk Patient for turned to duty Recommended award of the Purple Heart” Averett said the doctor dug several 22 caliber size fragments of shrapnel out of his right shoulder that were red hot on entry and he wore his arm in a sling for two weeks Averett said the suicide zero did not hurt him it was friendly fire from the surrounding ships firing at the plane He said if it was not for the helmet on his head he would not be here today Averett was born and raised in Utah and was inducted Washington into the US Navy on August 7 1943 in St George Utah After six weeks of boot camp at Farragut Idaho he was See Purple Heart on page 2 Congressman Family attends tribute for WW The U S government gave tribute Nov 24 to a group of heroic Native American men from the Navajo Nation The Navajo Code Talkers were awarded the highest civilian award the Silver Congressional Medal of Honor One man Samuel Tom Holiday from Kayenta Arizona received the honor with his family present which includes several Delta residents The Navajo Code Talkers were a group of men who used the Navajo Language in code during World War II This code is the only code that has never been broken in a war The code was mostly used on the island of Iwo Jima Siapan Titinan and Marshall Island It was top secret and it was not until 1968 that it was declassified by the government The Navajo language was first put into code by 29 men The first group of approximately 100 men used the code in battle soon after other Navajo men were sent Holiday was among the first group of men that went into battle Holiday has many stories to tell about his experience some sad and Since the code talkers some funny were considered top secret very few Marines knew of them When Holithe day first arrived to the islands Code Talkers got off the ship and onto a small education teacher was also a state finalist Sherry Paxton of Fillmore works at Millard High School and is the team leader of the Special Education DeHer program sen es as a partment model for the district according to Superintendent Ray Timothy “Sheny is a very positive upbeat individual who truly loves and cares about her students Her influence m working with special needs students has had a dramatic impact not only upon the students with whom she directly works but also upon the entire student body at Millard High” T said Paxton transferred from Fillmore Middle School three years ago and
