Show Pace 2 Millard County Chronicle Progress Mav 17 1993 TO THE EDITOR Doctors becoming extinct Preclp MJ22ia3LAI Dear Editor Rural doctors are going the way of the dinosaur Extinction is imminent of a breed of man whose lives are dedicated to the health of small town people And yet Delta is very fortunate indeed to have three such men Granted none of them can sew like a plastic surgeon or perform open heart surgery but there is a vital place for them in our society There are many people in our community walking around alive today because of them Rural medicine is difficult to practice It involves a very wide knowledge of many illnesses and interventions of these Men make mistakes and doctors are mere men Which is difficult to accept when the mistake happens to one of your children But criticism and maliciousness does nothing but produce fear and possibly the loss of the doctors we already have Delta has earned the reputation in the medical schools as a cut throat community with its doctors Which has made recruiting a new physician nearly impossible And so those who have be come over critical of the three doctors we are lucky enough to have may need to wake up Bid smell the roses! The reality is new doctors don't want to come here and work on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week The new generation of doctors want to work an 8 hour day with occasional call days and salaries much higher than we can offer here It’s very easy for those of us who can drive up north with our children for minor earaches to the “real” doctors there B ut there are two groups of people who may die if we lose our doctors due to lack of support Those are the elderly who are less mobile and can't just hop in the car and run to Provo and the life threatening emergencies which we are not exempt from (It might also pay to mention the babies who may be delivered in Dog Valley) I have worked side by side with each of our doctors and would trust any of them with the lives of my children Which is the best recommendation I can give any mortal man Ruth Hansen RN Libraries second to none looks pretty The words appear horizontally and diagonally in the above Can you find them? following vertically puzzle GRANDMOTHER CHILDREN HUSBAND CORSAGE KISSES DINNER SUNDAY HELP CARD HUGS in a dear jar with layers of different colors of salts presents and is a great flowers mother gift for your mom for Mother's Day COMMUNITY CALENDAR ' V Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore & Delta weekdays Millard County Assessor’s Office 2nd Thursday of Month Great Basm Historical Society meeting 730 pm Museum open every day pm except Sunday Every Thursday TOPS meets at Delta Middle School dining room 5 pm 10 am Wednesdays Story Hour Delta City Library Wednesdays pm class for Spanish speaking English people Delta City Library April 16 May 18 Long Term Agreement Agricultural Conservation Program May 3 31 Leavitt ChrisPainting Exhibit tensen’s oil paintings with two by son Steven Openhouse May 4 pm Fillmore Library Multipurpose Room May 17 Food Handlers Class 2:30 pm Fillmore Public Health Dept ($5 fee) May 18 "Diabetes and Stress" 10 a m Delta Med 3 Center Community pm Fillmore Community Center Deadline for ACP signup Millard County Republican Party Millard County Chronicle Progress The USPS Published 0 every Utah at Della Thursday 84624 by DuWd Publishing at 40 N 300 W Located Publisher Susan B Della Utah Editor - Trooper Nellson is doing s good job The threat to the motorist from his efforts has become widely known Before my recent trip I had heard in Seattle that US SO in western Utah was a roadd to avoid I won't (ravel that road again! MM! tells me humans are superior because they can whistle and kittys can’t Big deaL Last time I heard a human whistle a dog came I don’t get it Humans seem to like dogs Even more so than declining SAT scores this is an eloquent comment on the depressing state of human intelligence Sure like dogs kittys shed and occasionally rip up sofas and pillows knock over Christmas trees hide your car keys under the bed and make no contribution to the tax roles but have you ever seen a kitty on welfare? Sure like dogs kittys nap all the time but while napping they do not drool or block the doorway Ha When kittys sit on your chest so that you can have the privilege of giving them mbs they don't drool all over you and thump their stupid tails and whimper Do kittys have to be tied to large dog houses to keep them from eating the mailman? Do kittys try to attack passing Volkswagens? Do kittys slobber all over your newspaper while you’re trying to read and bark when you’re trying to watch Arsenio? Ha Do dogs purr? Ha Finally an appeal to human readers: as you can see His Nibs is a few bricks shy of a full chimney again this week He gets that way when he can’t think of anything to say This happens frequently When he gets thus he mutters a lot tosses and turns in his sleep like Lenin in his grave since Gorbachev and for generally makes life miserable anykitty trying to nap at the foot of the bed MM! isn’t I’m not saying good human for a kitty to have He is very good catfood at He and catbox changing keeps shopping plenty of fly around for me to chase He keeps his computer warm for when I want to lay on it and look out the window (He could clean the windows now and then but why get picky?) It's this writing problem he has: he keeps doing it You can help Please send your ideas for future columns to the newspaper However stupid they are believe me they can’t be as bad as MMl’s latest whopper a remake of Moby Dick starring the Editor as Ahab and Roseanne Barr as -no no I can’t go on - Domestic Violence Part 10: Men may also be the victims of violence by Marie L Godfrey Ph D “The most un reported crime is not wife beaiing-i- t'j husband beating" says sociologist Suzanne Steinmetz Since men are expected to be and physically superior it’s not stronger surprising that they do not report abuse unless it requires medical attention And then they probably report “an accident" just as women often do Dr Steinmetz’s study of found that wives beat husbands as often as the reverse In studying four types of aggressiveness she found that men and women are equally likely to beat their partner "The data seem to indicate few differences between husbands and wives in the type and frequency of physically aggressive acts used" observes Dr Steinmetz Dr Richard Gelles of New Hampshire agrees “Husbands are certainly victimized too" Why then is reported abuse of male spouses always lower than that for females? Some feel that society’s concept of masculinity discourages husbands from reporting their abuse Few men can face the humiliation needed to file an official report Several law enforcement officers in New Horizons trainings have commented that women are often part of die battering Some hit their spouses while others seem to “egg them on" This makes decisions at the scene of a domestic violence even more difficult The officer cannot automatically arrest the stronger person Sometimes the woman strikes the first blow which may lead the husband to strike back This again leads to the question of intent Do women slap their own husbands to provoke them into beatings which they enjoy? Some do but it may be more reasonable says Dr Steinmetz to recognize that aggressive tendencies are equal in both sexes Marriages between weak passive men and strong aggressive women are fertile territories for husband abuse If THE AFFECTION the woman is temporarily stronger say in the illness or drunkenness of her husband abuse may be possible also Men who find themselves in these situations can feel as trapped as women do in similar circumstances Should he take it or fight back? Should he report it and be ridiculed? If he does he may find the same bewildering frustrating experiences the battered woman finds Also there are even fewer places for help Some women skillfully manipulate a husband into violence to obtain a vorce often on the instructions of others The stories where this happens are common Another situation where male spouse abuse can occur is in homosexual relationships Here the beatings are from husband to wife but both are males"The reason appears to be that homosexuals are conditioned by the same things in society as heterosexuals "says Dr B L Daly When it comes to spouse killing there appears to be true equality between the sexes Studies by the FBI and others have found that an equal number of wives kills their husbands as husbands kill their wives Some argue that the husband deaths result from a battered wife who "cannot take it any more" and kills her husband to avoid further battering Homicide statistics indicate that a good number of husbands end up in the morgue The condition of husband beating is real and is probably more widespread than most would assume But husband abuse should not be viewed as a simple opposite of wife beating Both re part of the same problem which should be described is one person busing another person And abuse against any person whether child or adult male or female must be faced and treated New Horizons also counsels men whether they are abusers or abused Our phone lines are always available at and “The minds of our statesmen like the pupil of the human eye contract themselves the more the stronger light there is shed upon them” — Thomas Moore American Heart Association WERE FIGHTING NOURUFE FOR |
