Show Delta Utah $1500 in out ol Giardiasis not in Oak City Water Though several cases of the dreaded giardia parasite in humans have been confirmed in Oak City state health officials are convinced the town’s water system is not contaminated State Health Department Officials Byron T Haslam and J Travis Black traveled to Oak City last week to spect the system and determine once and for all the source of the parasites They informed the town council that four of the over 30 human stool specimens examined contained giardia cysts and were from small children suggesting the most likely source as family pets and perhaps some trom person to person Local health officials had assumed the giardia originated in the Oak City water system since other cases of contamination has occurred around the ast year over a thousand peostate ple were exposed to the parasite in Tooele when the water system there was contaminated But according to Mr Haslam it is easily possible for child petting a dog to pick up giardia eggs which get into the mouth when the child puts his fingers in his mouth “The eggs may also be transferred from hand to food to mouth” Mr Haslam said The health officials also pointed out that a few cases of giardiasis would be found in any group of people examined in Utah because it is such a common parasite in household pets and other animals Though it is “common” the giardia parasite is very dangerous and can be Health officials warn that deadly anyone afflicted with the disease shouid immediately obtain treatment “Without treatment a person may continue to harbor the eggs for several months and can infect other people" Mr Haslam said The only way to find the giardia organism is by laboratory examination from those of stool specimens suspected of having the illness Diarrhea nausea fever and pronounced are loss symptoms associated weight with giardiasis "Family members and others having close association with fected individuals should be aware of the symptoms and practice preventive hygiene such as washing the hands with soap and water after handling animals and before eating” Mr Haslam said State officials claim that about 350 cases of giardiasis are diagnosed in Utah every year They estimate that five times that many go unreported The parasite is often found in lakes and streams The city water system contamination such as in Tooele is believed to have been caused by the 1983 flooding problems After inspecting the Oak City Water System J Travis Black Evnironmen-ta- l Health Scientist for the state said that although the system does have a few defects as are commonly found in any water supply system it does not appear possible that giardia contamination could have entered the system “There have been no breaks in the system through which this type ol contamination could have gotten in” Mr Black said Meanwhile Oak City Mayor Bruce I ovell reported plans and funding finalized to make improvements for the water system as soon as possible Mayor Lovell said the town is anxious to do whatever is necessary to continue providing high quality water The state health officials commented that Oak City has a clean record of satisfactory results on water samples sent to the state laboratory each month Anyone with questions about giardia or symptoms should contact the local or their personal health deprtmcnt the Bureau ot Contact physician lor political system and a desire to travel are reasons why Delta Mayor Grant Nielson has decided not to seek a cond term this fall Alter manning the helm during Delta's most dramatic era of growth the mayor said it is time for someone else to step in and get the education in polities and government he has had “This job has been a great challenge have humbling in a lot of ways broadened my knowledge of government and big business also” he said “I veryone should have this kind of experience" or many years the served as councilman in his hometown of Leamington He also served four years as mayor there But he said that experience did little to prepare him for the experience of working for Delta dur“I think ing the boom years of IPP our budget in Leamington was usually under $2000” he said During the pasi four years the mayor has worked pounding out multimilhon dollar impact mitigation contracts with IPP and coordinated that money with state funding to rebuild the Delta sewer am: water systems build schools a new city hall and library increase local and recreation housing capacity facilities the police departmen-anattend to a seemingly endless list of taxing and zoning issues not to mention the public relations demand so much time In retrospect the mayor conclude-thprocess of transition from town to bustling boom town a smooth one in which everyone more or less worked toward common goals “There have been more good days than bad and in most areas IPP has met their obligations" he said “Nk e had a difference of opinions on several issues” he adds “I think more could have been done with Delta’s road situation and would like to have ecu more local builders supplying the holding needs but IPP did what thev thought they had to do and can': tauli them tor that" The mayor said the only criticism ot the impact mitigation process that teal him was directed at the ly bothered build up of the Delta Police Dc pan ment "IPP used the lormula ot one officer tor every 5(H) people and thev stuck to that think it was a good id because we really didn’t know what to expect in the way of law cnlotccmcni The idea was to be prepared in for whai we might need " Giv en the
