Show Page 4 Millard County USPS Thurs Nov 8 1984 Children need to be taught at home to respect good food that is provided Good nutritious food is so available now that nothing is a special treat It is one of the great benefits of the times and the good land where we live There are other lands When I was young I was told “Clean your plate remember the starving Russians” Maybe it was the Chinese I do not remember but the lesson was taught The man who gathers the garbage cans from the schools the restaurants the markets the homes carries away tall cans of the best food that money can buy to be processed and fed to animals to be recycled again or thrown away wasted The garbage dumps grow into mountains food prices rise Families who would not throw money into the wind or into the smoking dump scrap meat vegetables crusts of bread and a half glass of milk from the family places at the table The dollars soon add up There is an old family saying that persists even to these good times said by those who were hungry who worked in the garden and in the field and waited anxiously for the harvest “It is better to let the belly burst than to let good food go to waste” That was a different world and these are surely better times Now the family pig is not the pig but a disposal built into the kitchen sink there is no dishwater to save no bucket to collect the peelings just a heavy duty plastic bag If the time ever comes when “waste no want not” is in favor and needed again maybe then the “Use of the Pig” will mean something “We had the use of the pig” by Mary Henrie A farmer bought a pig for $1000 in the fall In the spring he sold the pig for $1000 His friend said “That was a poor bargain” “No” said the farmer “ had the use of the pig all winter” A simple example of simple times but there is a remembrance of other A time when nothing was times wasted a time when there were no great garbage dumps Then the farmer’s wife poured the dishwater into buckets all the scraps from the food preparation the potato peelings the apple peelings and cores the few scraps from the table Nothing was wasted It was carried to the pig The farmer’s values were learned in a different time when the old motto “Waste not want not” were lived by and it was a necessity Now we live in a time of plenty and a time of waste The city dumps grow into mountains and where to dump all the waste becomes a problem The present counsel of nutritionists says “It is better to leave the food on your plate than eat it when you do not want it” It is true but they need to add “Do not take more than you want Do not waste good food” Artists present Opera Piccola WMCC Pan Opera She is also an accomplished Irish Harpist Ann Hart a recipient of the 1980 Concert Artist Guild Award has made numerous appearances in the Washington DC including recitals at the Phillips and Renwick Galleries Since moving to Salt Lake City she has the Pan Artists!
