Show Page 6 - Millard County USPS Thurs Sept 6 194 Delta High’s award winning newspaper students sing for Accapella 81 While New equipment and members set up Show Choir for year “Having Show Choir first period is a big advantage because we’re able to make sure everyone is there for rehearsals It gives a chance to leave the equipment set up in the auditorium us more rehearsal leaving time” said Mr David Wankier choir director Mr Wankier who has been at Delta High for three years has had a Show Choir each year but this year he was able to work it into the curriculum The group has new equipment and a backup group which include Justin McWilliams and Vance Terrell on drums Mark Petersen guitar Steve Simmons bass guitar and a duo of Marci Garrett and Adam Seltzer on keyboards Troy Young Dave Porter Kevin Ashby Mark Petersen and Jason Bennett make up the male voices While sopranos Jennifer Abbott Lesa Van Wagoner Lori Roberts and altos Marci Garrett Peggy Hansen and Dana Bringard make up the other half Both Troy Young and Lesa Van Wagoner were involved in Show Choirs in their previous schools Troy said “I think Mr Wankier makes a big difference It’s a good experience because we sing more popular music than I have in the past” “The students put forth more effort than I’ve ever seen and they act like they want to sing” said Lesa Mr Wankier has set specific goals for the Show Choir this year He said “This group will be highly visible They will perform 20 times or more for programs and functions as well as complete tours” feed on such groups some teenagers as Van Halen Def Leppard and Motley Crue others listen to B101 or K96 as if it’s essential to their existence But in fourth period class Accapella these same students immerse themselves in a harmonious classical experience For the past two years at the high school the Accapella program has been one of the strongest 2A vocal powers in Utah Last year the group was able to combine with the SUSC Accapella for Shubert’s Mass in G a combination they plan again this year Accapella has 81 students this year Out of this group 43 have never been in Accapella before First year member Susan Topham said “It’s going to be fun because we get to sing different kinds of music” Having all students receive a good musical experience is one of the goals of Mr Wankier He said “I think if you can have as big a sound with 80 members as with 40 then it’s better because more students have a good musical experience” He also feels that classical music gives its own reward Marci Garrett newly elected Accapella president said “I think we have a lot of potential but everybody needs to become adjusted After that happens we’re going to be incredible” “There are a lot of new kids but things are slowly coming together” said vice presiAshby The secretarial duties of are handled by Lisa Stanworth Although Accapella means without accompaniment pianists are needed for some pieces and for practices Adam Seltzer wjll carry most of the accompanist duties "Adam doesn’t have much experience companying but" Wankier said ” he is as good a pianist as this high school has ever dent Kevin the class had” Because of their sight reading abilities Marci Garrett and Kim Clay will also take their turn at the keyboard Mr Wankier has seen the stiffer school requirements affect his program negatively but he said “As long as we can keep the younger grades interested and find an Accapella period that will suit most individuals we will have a strong choral department in the future” Left to right: Leslie canning and freezing recipes to help retain the color flavor and texture of food but it is an tional ingredient Georgia Lauritzen Utah State University Extension nutrition specialist says if you are trying to reduce sugar in your diet most of your favorite canning recipes will work fine without the added sugar She suggests though you try some small batches of sugar reduced recipes before you make any major changes in your canning You can safely reduce sugar but if your family won’t eat the product your efforts will have been in vain Lauritzen cautions She suggests reducing sugar to your taste or omitting it altogether and using the hot pack method of preparing fruit Add a tle water or unsweetened fruit juice then cook the fruit until it is boiling hot Next pack the fruit into hot jars Use extra boiling water or fruit juice to cover the fruit in the jars The fruit is then ready to process in a boiling water bath for the recommended time for that fruit Lauritzen says fruit can be frozen without sugar in two ways Dry pack works best for berries such as blueberries raspberries or cranberries It can also be used for rhubarb or apple slices Spread the whole cut fruit one layer deep on a tray or cookie sheet and freeze When the fruit is frozen hard pack into freezer containers or bags and seal She says the juice pack method works well with other fruits Whole cut or crushed fruit is packed into containers and covered with the unsweetened fruit juice Fruit can also be packed in water but Lauritzen says the flavor will not be as good as juice pack She says you may also notice that fruits canned or frozen without sugar may be a tle softer more pale and have less flavor than those packed in heavy sugar syrup fruits such as apples Some peaches and pears need special treatent to keep them from turning brown Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) dissolved in water or juice is the most effective method of preventing browning Lauritzen says a lot of confidence team leadership and is
