The opera is devoted to a concept of loyalty and integrity in the face of nearly overwhelming temptation. Though con- ceived for the operatic stage, the Prelude and Liebestod were frequently conducted by Wagner at symphonic concerts. All of Richard Strauss s have important been performed by the Utah Symphony on its subscription tone-poem- series, but Death and Transfiguration has been the most popular. Strauss didnt offer a program of this work, but he did inscribe a poem by Ritter on the flyleaf of the score in German. The poem is the most satisfactory explanation of the music for those not content with the title. The final work of the evening will be Blochs Sacred Service. Completed in 1933, its first American performance occurred in New York the following year. The text is drawn from the Union Prayerbook of Jewish Worship and constitutes a milestone in the history of liturgical music. The Sacred Service is the first composition on a large scale written for Jewish worship by a composer of choral-orchestr- stature. Tickets for the Dec. 4 concert can be obtained at the Utah Symphony, 55 West First South, weekdays, or at the box office located outside the south gate of the Tabernacle, one hour before the concert. pate. Plants have become the thing to have in your house recently and the care and feeding of the greenery seem to be a major topic of conversation, as each plant requires different amounts of water sunlight and plant food. Oh yes, plant food. It seems like it wasnt long ago that if you put a plant in fairly decent soil, saw to it that the plant received adequate sun and watered it when needed, the plant would grow, at least for most of us. But now in every grocery store, department store, pet store or variety store there is a display of plant food giving one the impression that the poor plant wont make it without this special food. Not only that, but there is a variety of plant cleaners and conditioners available also. Now I always have had a green thumb even without these special things and my plants seem to like living in my house. At least I think they like it, which brings us back to communicating with my plants. Even though I talk to my plants, they never seem to give me an answer. But unless my eyes deceive me, they do respond to music as some people say. I have found my plants grow straighter when I play music something akin to soft classical, buy I havent noticed that any other music affects them much one way or the other, which does lead me to believe my eyes are deceiving me. Since Im not the only one fascinated with plants and their process of growth, I dont feel quite so bad devoting so much time to my foliage.
