Sally Roush, SDSU's interim president, announced the creation of a task force to review the mascot and moniker. According to the university, the task force will be comprised of five student, five stafffaculty members and five alumni representatives as well as two community members appointed by Roush. Nominations for task force representatives will be taken through Jan. 26 and the task force members was announced Feb. 2. "All viewpoints regarding SDSU's identity have a right to be respectfully heard and carefully considered," Roush said in a school news release. "This task force will provide an opportunity for dialogue to continue among stakeholders in the SDSU community and will provide information on how to represent university traditions, build communal spirit and honor specific facets of our campus culture." The task force will be given an April 30 deadline to present its information and recommendation to Roush, who, according to the release, "said she intends to make a final decision about munity." San Diego State University's Senate voted overwhelmingly to retire the Aztec mascot in November, just seven months after student leaders voted to keep it. The resolution was a nonbinding advisory to the at-lar- ge , university president, calling for SDSU to retire the human representation of an Aztec and the use of spears or "weapons that connote barbaric representations of the Aztec culture." It also called for creating a task force to investigate and make recommendations about the appropriateness of the continued usage of the Aztec moniker. In order to apply for a DSU Camp Kesem chapter, Hafen said she had to find 100 students who would be willing to participate in the camps and about 15 professionals, either on campus or from cancer clinics, who would be willing to be on an advisory board. She also had to make sure DSU would allow banking. Hafen said bringing a Camp Kesem chapter to DSU would be beneficial for the community because of the new cancer center opening its doors in summer 2018. "Families will be moving from all over to St. George," she said. "Right now St. George has one of the greatest treatments for cancer because we do more than just the normal treatments." Douglas Sainsbury, adviser for biology and students, the word helped spread about the voting process for Camp Kesem and said having a chapter at DSU would benefit the children in the community. "They'll be able to interact with students or other kids who are in similar situations where their parents are affected by cancer as well," Sainsbury said. Hafen said in previous years, schools had received "cheat or fake votes," so Camp Kesem makes sure to check each of the votes the schools obtain. Hafen has been the driving force behind wanting to bring a Camp Kesem chapter to DSU. Hafen said she was interested in bringing a chapter to DSU after hearing her mom's experiences from being on the advisory board for the chapter at Southern Utah University. Hafen couldn't get involved with the SUU sity of Dayton, University of Delaware, University of Houston, University of North , Gardiner said. "I learned a lot from my mentor, from the talks and lectures given by Stanford faculty and researchers I attended, and from the mistakes and successes I had in the lab." Students will work with different aspects of cancer research like the effectiveness of new and current treatments. They may also participate in more research where students run lab techniques to determine the efficiency of treatments. Sainsbury said students who want to go into professional or researchl medicine should apply. "It's really beneficial to have this research on aplab-bas- i ed plications," Sainsbury said "During interviews, participants are often asked their research at Stanford University, and they're able to go in detail about what they're able to do." Applications for this research opportunity are due Friday, and interviews will be held shortly after. The applications will be reviewed by a group at DSU and at Intermountain Precision Genomics. Those groups will interview three to five students and choose who they see fit. Applications can be mailed or delivered to Sainsbury's office in DSID Science Building 131. about H o -- 6 Co C Z Z s m PRON contir Over c.
