My sister was diagnosed with ulcerative r colitis when she was 16. tUC is a disease where ulcers form in the colon, which causes inflammation and severe pain and can cause the body to become septic if not treated. For the past 12 years, she has been taking over eight daily medications, has had multiple surgeries, and has spent months of her life in and out of hospi07, tals. z. 0z Finally, over the m w was she when summer, rushed to the emergency rT, w room, her doctor told her 0z the best option would be z I ,,, I , 1 1 . f , i ease that has haunted her for most of her life. However her p cm surgery life had some hurdles. Without her colon, she was unable to stay hydrated. She found herself in the hospital again a week after her recovery, and her doctor told her she would need to up her water intake to two gallons, or 256 ounces of water, every day. My sister was very discouraged when she ' , i, f . . often than before I started. According to greatis.com, drinking more water will do these things for you and more, such as boosting cognitive thinking, improving kidney function, hangover help, etc. The set amount for an average adult to consume varies, but an article on mayoclinic.org says we 4 should be drinking ounces of water every day. Drinking two gallons of water hasn't been eas for my sister, but she to me that having a drinkir buddy helps her stay in( tivated. She went to the doctor's earlier this we and she was excited t o him she has been drinking two gallons of wate every day. Get in the habit of tracking yot water consumption, and take a water bottle with you to class. There are many water bottle stations around campus th will give you filtered fresh water. Your bathroom breaks may be int frequent, but the health benefits are worth it. t, , ' k , first heard the news, so I decided to do this with her and became her drinking buddy. We agreed that I'd only have to drink a gallon, meaning I was drinking 128 ounces of water daily. So far, we have consumed 5,376 ounces of water just in the past two weeks. Although I did this for emotional support, I found some very interesting effects by upping my water intake. Over the past couple weeks, I have noticed my skin has cleared up, I have more energy, and I eat less to get her colon taken out. The surgery was long, but it was successful. Instead of stressing about what to wear and who to go with, all I need to vvorry about is when to purchase my ticket for the dance. Most of you may already know of True Trailblazer, a homecoming midnight tradition where you can kiss your sweetheart, or practically any person, in the school fountain right after the dancea tradition shared by DSU for many years. This tradition, although strange, is something that separates DSU Homecoming Week from high school homecoming. It's practically the highlight of Homecoming Week. As I enter my second year attending DSU homecoming, I look forward to the traditions and hope to continue them in future years at DSU. angle with their rears backed-u- p on a boy. But college homecoming is different in many ways. It is more of a festivity than a special occasion. Here at Dixie State University, tradition and spirit roars through the campus as a full week of homecoming events commences. Tickets for college homecoming tend to be significantly cheaper than high school. The DSU Student Association kicks off the week announcing all events, with paper flyers and media outlets, leading up to the homecoming football game. As usual the dance is held around the time of Halloween, thus giving the dance a costume theme. But there's no popularity contest, no kings and queens, just students enjoying their night, which I believe is how it should be. Later, those same cups sit in a trash can and wait for someone to take them away. As more and more people buy their sodas from The Market, Stacks, and Infusion, more and more styrofoam clogs our landfill. Tracey O'Kelly, chair of the Sustainability Committee, said, "Styrofoam cups do not break down in the environment... and Will be here forever polluting our environment." Because styrofoam can take billions of years to decom- pose, prolonged utilization of the cups can negatively impact our landfills, leading to disposal problems in the future. Recycling seems magic way to make the ctr, vanish, but we cannot do cheaply. Recycling styrofil takes time, energy and mo! making it environmental1) taxing and expensive. Tit cheap to produce and buy styrofoam consists of petll' leurn byproducts, not rale' able which stresses our environment the future. Dixie State cannot cont1 to use styrofoam cups on campus and refuse to the future while ignoring i Vol Stt Mer fe consequences.
