If I get that, itd be great, but if I dont, its not a problem. Just enough to get me by would be great. Anything helps. Arollo has raised $165 toward her goal so far. She plans to spend every dime on the tryout, but any leftover money will help her finish school. In a Twitter message, Arollo said she has the chance to go pro because she has a strong support network. I believe in myself and so do my family and friends, Arollo said. If they think I have a chance, I should go for it. Head soccer coach Kacey Bingham said she doesnt know much about Arollo s decision to go pro, but she said Arollo is a great player. She did a great job at this level at our program Division II, Bingham said. She was named to the first team with PacWest. Arollos love for soccer isnt new. Williams mentioned some of the projects in the works for Dixie State University, including a bigger student success center, the upcoming Human Performance Building, and renovations to DSUs athletic complexes. Williams said one of the most important goals in Dixie 2020 is to increase opportunities for students. We want to attract students to DSU so were the No.l destination for students in Utah, Williams said. Whether youre a brainiac or if youre like me and a little more challenged when it comes to academics, we want DSU to be the place for all kinds of students. Increasing student enrollment at DSU to 12,500 within the next five years is one of the goals outlined in Dixie 2020, Williams said. He said he wants to increase the number of ethnically-divers- e students at DSU to 30 percent, with 5 percent of DSUs total enrollment to be international students. Once completed, the new Hansen Stadium will be an ideal place for all kinds of community events, including community athletic games, commencements and conferences once the renovations are complet- - see WILLIAMS page 2 WHAT'S INSIDE News 1 Opinion 3 Sports 5 Features 7 Communication department divides into two separate degrees, emphases BY MARKEE HECKENLIABLE (ffimarkeekaeDSN CONTACT NEWS TIPS AND LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DixieSunDixie.edu Jennings room 34 225 S. 700 East St. George, UT 84770 1 435-652-78- 18 The communication degree and department at Dixie State University is changing due to its growth. The communication degree will be split into two degrees with a media studies degree and a communication studies degree and will be implemented in January. ADVERTISING DixieSunAdsDixie.edu 435-414-00- 95 fax: 435-656-40- 19 Brent Yergensen, associate dean and department chair for the communication department, said one reason the department is splitting is because the depart ment has become large enough to need more management. He said another reason the department is splitting is because the two formal emphases have separate curriculums. Were talking about media and communication, Yergensen said. They have different professional associations. Class listings will be different when signing up for communication classes. If students apply for a communication studies course, the abbreviation will be COMM. If students apply for a media studies course, the abbreviation will be MDIA. Yergensen said the communi- cation degree, formally known as the emphasis in human communication, has not seen many changes. But the media studies degree, formally known as the emphasis in mass communication, has seen quite a bit of changes. David Harris, assistant communication professor and department chair for media studies, said there will now be four emphases in the media studies degree. Theres an emphasis in digital film production, which already exists with the old degree; a multimedia journalism emphasis; a social media emphasis; and a generic emphasis. Now we have a generic emphasis, which is essentially just a choose your own adventure where you can kind of pick and choose the courses that you want after youve taken the core requirements, Harris said. Harris said officials in the communication department hope to also start a strategic communication emphasis, which is geared toward advertising, public relations and marketing. He said the department hopes to offer that to students in a year from now. The degrees themselves havent changed as far as the core requirements go, Harris see DIVIDES page 2 |
