Senior offensive lineman Nyles Amelita, an accounting major from Tustin, California, said he gives all the credit to the coaches. "We just stuck to the game plan the coaches set us up with, and it worked out well," Ame lita said. "The coaches did a great job preparing us for all aspects of the game, and we went out there and executed." DSU made two school records during the game with a total of 404 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. The team also had 24 first downs. Senior running back Myles Burton, a criminal justice major from Berkeley, California, said the team mentally focused for the game. "Since we had a short week to prepare for the game, we had to give our bodies some rest to be ready for Central Washington," Burton said. "We definitely played a lot better than we did in week one, but I wasn't surprised. I knew we could do it, (and) it was only a matter of time." Barney then made his touchdown extending the lead to 14-"We really emphasized on running the ball, and that was a huge success for us," Ame lita said. DSU's defense was ready to play, holding CMU to a total of 301 yard of offense, including only allowing 80 yards on the ground. Defense had a total of three sacks. "We just have to keep play ing the type of football we played, we have to be mistake free and make big plays," Burton said. Amelita said he is hopeful for the rest of the season as long as the individuals on the team do their jobs and put trust in their teammates to do their job. On the second day of the crossover tournament, DSU would have a rematch with Northwest Nazarene. The Storm beat NNU in last year's NCAA tournament, in a match when the Crusaders were the team in the country. NNU took the first set convincingly, but DSU bounced back and never trailed in the second, winDixie State ning went on win the match in three consecutive sets by dominating after the opening set loss. Junior outside hitter Delayne Daniel posted her of the second double-doubl- e with match season in the 17 kills and 10 digs. DSU posted a season high 13 blocks in the victory. The Storm then faced the host team Central Washington, looking to get to .500 on the season. The Wildcats spoiled DSU's efforts to do so by dominating the first set on its way to a 1 victory. "The girls played really well," Felder said. "We were facing some of the top teams in the country and we played right there with them. We are a young team and we'll find a way to finish games as the season goes on." Dixie State, now standing at 5 on the season, will head to California this weekend to begin conference play against California Baptist University and Point Loma before returning home to face Notre Dame De Namur Sept. 23 at 3-- 6 p.m. I |
