According to the study, DSU has made an effort to extend the invitation to participate to not only students, faculty and staff, but also their spouses. By offering a variety of IM sports, Dixie State is committed to getting students involved and social on campus, while staying active and having fun, according to Bestcolleges. com Dave Howell, assistant director of intramural and club sports, said the purpose of this program is to be within the walls of the university. Intramural literally i translates into within the walls, Howell said. We want to establish events and leagues within DSU that will bring everyone involved closer together. DSU intramural pro- gram was established in 2007 and has been growing each year with more student involvement. Howell said he puts in an effort to advertise the pro- WHAT Acceptance rates Rentention rates Graduation rates Enrollment rates gram throughout campus but recognizes its continual popularity through word of mouth between students. If we are able to maintain a quality program, it will continue to grow because of the fun students are able to have, Howell said. According to The National Intramural-Recreation- curry come; i DENISON al Sports Association, leadership, teamwork, dedication, and respect are among the many skills exercised by inclusive competition, fitness and recreation. The NIRSA believes that collegiate recreation is a significant and powerful key to inspiring wellness in local, regional and global communities. Nate Stevenson, a junior exercise science major from St. George, said its unusual to find a place where the level of competitiveness is equally matched to the level of good sportsmanship and friendship. I have made friendships that will last a lifetime and the program at DSU really helps students feel the Dixie spirit, Stevenson said. DSU offers a variety of sports and activities for students and faculty details and student involvement is what distinguishes DSU from other universities, Howell said. We are not throwing in just general sports but sports that will fill the needs of the students, Howell said. From racquetball, flag-footb- all and volleyball to video games, Howell said he will try almost anything. Overall, Howell said he gives credit of their success to the entire staff. We have an amazing staff on the grounds that make everything happen, Howell said. They care about the students and they want to make sure that it is successful. This program is extremely organized, said Jessica Russell, a sophomore criminal justice major from Oak Hills, California. Having multiple refs on time to each game and allowing us to have complete control of who is on our teams makes it a much more enjoyable experience. The intramural program limitation at the moment stands within the facilities that it has at its disposal.. As DSU constructs more physical exercise facihties, it will allow for more games and activities within the already thriving program. The intramural program looks forward to maintaining the success it has had and expanding with the university, HoweU said. DSU fans were hopeful for the Red Storm before Saturday's opinions and views are often dominated by athletes, coaches and members of the media. We decided to give the fans an opportunity to let their voices be heard on Saturday. Prior to the kickoff of the 2015 football season, the fans had come to a unanimous consensus: Dixie State University football team is on its way up. Every fan who was interviewed was optimistic about the coaching changes and new recruits brought in this offseason. Hurricane resident and former DSU student Joshua Rosen said he has heard about the new era of DSU football all summer long. Everyones been talking about these new coaches and the players they are bringing in, Rosen said. They arc supposedly going to change the team for the better, so I am excited to see what all the fuss is about. Shay McClure and Blaine Monkres, DSUs new defensive and offensive coordinators are who Rosen referred too. Last year was a close game, Rosen said. I think they beat us in overtime so it should be another close one this year. Hopefully, we can pull it out this time. Last years game was, in fact, a close one. An intercepe tion in the back of the 7 win for sealed the CMU. Rosen, along with 4,000 other Stoim fans didnt get end-zon- 44-3- Hu ujy what they expected Saturday as DSU was pummeled by Colorado Mesa University 43-- 3 and had seemingly picked up right where they n left off after last years season. The fans tone had changed following the blowout loss, former DSU student and lifelong fan Matt Jones, said he was disappointed to see the team revert back to its old one-wi- ways. I was really excited to see how tire team adjusted to the new coaches and system, Jones said. Unfortunately, we just didnt see a whole lot. Jones did, however, say he believes the team still has some hope. Its still early, Jones said. I wasnt expecting their first game to be perfect, and I did see a lot of players that seemed to have some real athleticism and talent, so Im definitely looking forward to seeing what the team improves on going forward. DSU will get a chance to redeem itself this Thursday at home against Central Washington University at 6 p.m. |
