Planning seems pretty overwhelming to a lot of us, but Ive found planning saves me some major dough. The major planning I make each week is my meals. I hardly ever go out to eat because its a wallet drainer and there are generally ho healthy food choices at restaurants. So my favorite thing to do each week is to make a huge pot of soup that usually costs less than $10, and Ill eat that each night. I also plan out how much Im going to spend at places I just cant avoid, eh hem, Starbucks. I will buy myself a gift card for an amount that fits into the 503020 rule, and then for that week, Ill know I only have the amount I have set aside for myself. In America, this tradition has helped to define gender roles during the holiday season. Heres the thing -- 1 love cooking. I love it to the point where I sometimes stay up during all hours of the night and make food just to make it because its fun. I once cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner for eight people and was stoked to be able to have the chance to do single-handed- such a thing. Maybe its just me (its not) but it seems like whenever there are family the men in the family are always doing something with meat: grilling, carving or what have you. I remember a few years ago when I went home for winter break, which is a time that we expect to have relaxation and no worries about working on anything. All I could think about was how many cookies I was going to have to make. I wondered why I had to do this. Sure, I was darn good with a sugar cookie recipe, but Im pretty certain any of my uncles could have handled taking on a batch themselves. My uncle Dalian makes some of the best food Ive ever tasted.
