We know what our responsibilities arc. Well be able to handle it. Johnson and Cluff both said information about the search for a permanent AD will come after Irvins destination school makes the formal announcement. In addition to Irvin leaving DSC, several members of coaching staffs have also left their posts to pursue other endeavors. After just one year as head coach of DSCs softball team, Beth Collett stepped down from her position. Her resignation came as a surprise to many, as she led the team to an impres3 sive season. The team went all the way to the NCAA Division II World Series. Collett and her staff were also named Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Even with her successful season, Collett was not immune to this volatile economy. Cluff said because her work as head coach was only a part-tim- e job, she had to make the decision to e take a position elsewhere. "She had an opportunity to go somewhere else, so she took it," Cluff said. 41-1- full-tim- Cluff said that coaching position has been hard to fill because of the pait-tun- e salary 515,000 per year. Its been kind of a roller coaster: five years, three coaches, he said. A lot of that is attributed to the salary. While the team suffered a loss when Collett announced she was leaving, many are optimistic about the return of Randy Simkins to replace Collett as head coach. Cluff said Simkins led the 2004 DSC softball team to the best season on record 49-- 6. Simkins said he is more comfortable with the position now bee cause he has a as teacher employment at Dixie High School, where he was also previously the head coach for the softball team. He said the biggest challenge in transitioning to collegiate ball will be to keep up with the NCAA rules. Otherwise, he said he has high expectations for the next season. We have a chance to be really good again, he said. The softball team was not the only program to lose a staff member to other opportunities. Michael Olson, a former assistant coach for DSCs mens basketball team, resigned from his coaching position to take on a job as an academic advisor for DSC. Ali Threet, community full-tim- WOW continued from page engagement coordinator for athletics, said Olson had to choose between the coaching and advising positions in order to fully comply with NCAA rules. Also, Olson said fulfilling the requirements for both positions would be too daunting a task. "Both positions requiie e attention," Olson said. "Its very difficult to give 100 percent to both jobs." Olson added that all things considered, the advisement position is the best fit for him right full-tim- 1 Cost is 55 with a student ID and 510 without. Local disc jockey DJ Lex will be rolling the tunes. Overall, many students see these activities as a way to get acquainted with their fellow Red Stormers. Logan Havens, a sophomore art major from St. George, said he likes being part of the crowd. It's good to mingle with the students I'll be going to school with for the next semester, he said. Student government members hope these events will be the first of many successful ones to come as they vamp up publicity efforts. If you dont hear about whats going on at Dixie this year, then youre locked in a closet," Jensen said. This year student governments theme 'dream team,' and we want students to feel more a part of something and feel adept to get involved. e Additional reporting by Kindra Straatman now. "This was purely a decision for my family," Olson added. Since Olson's resignation came so close to the beginning of the school year, the team's coaching staff will have to work quickly to find someone to fill the position. Jon Judkins, head coach for the men's basketball team, said it is important that they take enough time to ensure they find the best fit for the assistant coaching job. "We're going to try to open it up and see who we can get," Judkins said. "Being as late as it was, we're trying to do it correctly." Judkins added that finding someone with Olson's amount of experience will not be easy. "He has to do what's best for him and his family, but it will be hard to replace him," Judkins said.
