DSC Forensic team axed By: BreAnne LeRoy News Editor It was decided last week to terminate the life of debate and forensics on Dixie States campus. After Utahs state accountants overshot their yearly budget by $20 million, Dixie State College is now having to operate on only 94 percent of the funding in which they relied on last year. The 6 percent in which DSC has to do without, ended up totaling $420,000. As Dixie searched for funds to cut, they landed upon the debate and forensics traveling budget. The word Forensics at DSC means debating at a competitive level. The forensic team consists of about 10 students. Last year, the forensics team was very successful. Success came with a price. In order for these students to compete they have to travel long distances in a van. Other than SUU, their closest By: BreAnne LeRoy News Editor The first week of school is over and it is time to plunge into our studies. Yeah right! There are a lot more activities Welcome Out Week is to come, just the beginning. WOW was a big success this year. The week started off on Monday with New Student Orientation. Orientation isn't fun, but it is necessary and informative. The next event was movie night, which took place on Wednesday behind the fine arts building. Movie Night was a big hit. Hundreds of students gathered around to watch So 1 Married as Axe Murderer, and to chow down on free popcomand drinks. The Club Rush carnival was the next event. This took place on Friday afternoon by the library, and Friday night next to the clubs Several Gardner center. gathered together to promote their ideas and get students involved. DixieActivity Board, DSUN, LDSSA, Ambassadors, REACH, PBL, Cheerleaders, Rodeo and the Rebel Crew were some of the clubs that were present. Free stuff was handed out right and left, from to ice cream. Standby, a local band, entertained the students as they enjoyed the fun and games provided by clubs. Following the carnival came Entertainment Dixie. Dixie brought in a juggler, Bobby Beselhnn, and The laughing stock, an improve comedy group. The shows had a late start. Dixie States students refused to pay the small fee of $2 to get into the entertainment. There were only a dozen students whose wallets didnt squeak as they walked. This years Vice President of Activities, Roslyn Palmer, generously let the students in for free so her entertainers would least have an audience. After the place finally filled up, the Juggler Bobby Beselhnn could start his amazing, and death defying tricks. He started out with the basics of juggling 3 to 5 pins, but as he moved on he got more and more amazing. While balancing on a miniature surfboard, which was set on top of a stack of cylinders, he rocked back and forth, balancing a girl (Sarah) from the audience on his shoulders. His next act also required a member of the audience. He asked a muscular man, Austin Calley,, to come forth and help him on his now a competition is at least eight hours away. Traveling was dangerous because of the extensive distance and the late hours. In fact, the team was involved in a wreck last year. A combination of icy roads and bad weather caused their van to flip. There were some minor scratches and bruises. Is competing worth the risk? The forensics team has been competing since 1938. This will no longer be. It is an extensive loss for this institution and the students which are involved with forensics. Professor Eric Young, DSC forensic coach, said, I hate to be the one to put the last nail in the coffin. An era is ending and we must push on. At times, institutions have to make sacrifices in order to make progress. The forensic team will still be putting on Parliamentary debates for DSC, and their debates will also be broadcast over a local TV channel. 1 WOW 16-1- Got a job? Need a ride? Guess what? Saint Georges own new public transportation system, DARTS, has stops at Dixie State College. The buses run Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and arrive on the hour and half hour. Remember, its always a good idea to be a few minutes early, so the bus wont miss you. backup. Because its just a starter system, the DARTS fleet has two kinds of buses, thelO-1- 2 8 passengers passenger buses and the ones. Also, each bus is handicapped accessible. The buses attire are the product of advertisements or traveling billboards. Information on rates and routes can be found at http:www.fcaog.state.ut.usdart - unicycle. After he made it up on top of th bike he had Austin hand him a bowling ball a machete, and a lighted torch. Yes, Bohl was on top of a unicycle and juggling thou very three items. CRAZY! He made r through and the crowd went wild! Not oni was his show entertaining at a physicj aspect but he also cracked jokes through th entire event. The unique thin; about the show is the impromptu nature of it No two shows can ever be tht same. There were three men and a womar who did the acting and then their hosi was Melissa Porter. They had an entertaining way of getting the audience up and involved. They were great; they even did an impression of The Crocodile Hunter"! The final event of WOW took place on Saturday night, The First Chance Stomp." DJ Mark Larsen kept the party going. Tht ballroom was packed as hundreds of student: tried to shack it fast. The temperature filled that made it the air obvious that the room was bursting with energy. A little too much energy for one, Matt Vandermyne, a sophomore at Dixie, who decided to try and attempt a back flip. He didnt quite make it all the wa) around and landed smack on his face, breaking open his upper lip. Matt tried to get back up and dance, not knowing that his lip was split open when he lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital. The verdict came out to be that his lip is going to require plastic surgery, and that he acquired a goose egg on his forehead. Matt is doing just fine and isnt worried about it. Chicks dig scars... right? WOW turned out to be very successful.
