New students were introduced, and encouraged to become familiar with the new student officers, cheerleaders, and the school song. The orientation was an all day event, giving Freshmen a chance to get involved with others. Students weie split up into groups. The first group went around campus understanding what buildWhile ing represented what. learning what college life is expected, each individual received a membership on the school computers for their benefit of use anytime. The students then learned where everything was, including where the library is located at. At 1 a.m., students switched sections. Freshmen were crowded in the auditorium where a speaker from Chicken Soup For The Soul gave great advise. He spoke on how each student should get involved in school because this was an opportunity of a lifetime. By reciting the story' of the young girl 1 who wanted to go to clown school although her parents refused, the speaker gave many students a chance to let their heart lead them to their new beginning in life. The guest speaker also gave us seven keys to help us with our attitude: The first was, Be ready". Second, he told us to Get professors on your side". Next was Do internships. After that he said The secret to success m lifecol-leg- e is to ask the question- - Why are here? Then he stated, Focus you on building quality relationships." Next was Treat others as you would like to be treated. Finally, he encouraged us to never forget your three Fs which were Faith, Family, and Fnends. There was quite a confusion with group pictures later on in the afternoon, and many students missed being in the earlier picture. In fact, some students lost their group during the confusion so they simply went with another group. Later, students crowded into the ballroom to receive what some freshmen thought was the best, free food Dixie served salad, pizza, and drinks for the new student's welcome. For the second part of the day, students were gestured over to a leader for the profession they were interested in. The freshmen went to their departmemal meetings for their majors, and if they had not chosen their major, they w'ent where they thought they might be interested. The students who had chosen two majors, had to chose to go to one they had previously cho sen. During each individual session, professors proudly responded answers to the curious crowds. Many students thought the onentation was boring, while others really enjoyed it. Jill Chase, a freshman, stated, "The speaker was really good and I enjoyed meeting new people." Dixie's new student onentation excited the new freshmen for school to begin the next day. This helpful tool of onentation led students to get a feel of what is going to be expected tor this school year here at Dixie The time of your life... Dixie Freshman Experience More Than They Can Afford seen because Look at your life High school is a By Cade Stubbs Opinion Editor as a book. On the morning of the August 20th, my alarm caused me to awake much earlier than had gotten up for months. This made me realize that the time for staying out late and was over, so waking up mid-da- y climbed out of bed. By 8:30 that morning I, along with the rest of Dixie State Colleges freshman class, had journeyed to the college for our first day of school. For many of us it had been only a few months since we had left high school behind, and for others, the desire to further their education brought them here. As freshman Janae close of one chapter, and college is the start of another. Although Dixie is home to many students who come from the surrounding areas, it is also a new home for other students. When asked freshman what she Benmon Alissa thought of her new home, she simply stated, Its hot. My first thoughts about college life was that it would be very different from high school, and after my first week, couldnt be more right. Im with a school full of people and only know a handful of them. Another aspect of college life had previously forgot I Lakey put it, I I ten to consider was that going to class and getting good grades seems a lot more important because am the one paying for it. There also seems to be a bigger sense of freedom, along with moic responsibility, that comes with it all. My first impressions of the school were good. The student council has done a wonderful job in welcoming us all with the barbecue, movie night, the dance, and the other activities that took place in the first week. Crystal Baker, a freshman, attended the First Chance Dance on Saturday night. The stomp was really crowded, she said, but it was a lot of fun... Ive met some new peo some old friends, and Ive really enjoyed everything so far. There are quite a few things for us all to look forward to for the next semester, such as football season starting, the upcoming stomps and dances, and just the aspect of meeting new people. One thing that do not have the chance to experience is living in the dorms or an apartment. For many students, the idea of breaking away from their parents and going out on their own is an appealing idea. Freshman Krystle Grant says, Its really different living with a roommate, especially sharing a bathroom with four other girls. Im glad chose the dorms ple and I I you make friends easifor some, living on your own can be a downright nightmare. In the past, have heard horror stories of roommates, the condition of rooms, and the shortage of That is money one suffers. enough evidence for me to stay away from 5 too many roommates in a not so big apartment. All in all, can say that am excited for the semester ahead of me, and the ones that may follow after this. New people, new experiences, new classes, new lives. Thats pretty much what it is. Everyone says that your college years can be the best time of your life, and for this freshman class, its just beginning. er. Unfortunately I |
