It means that people will quit asking, when are you going four years? which has been the number one question over the last 20 years, joked Max Rose, Vice President of Academics at Dixie, who has spent much of his adult life trying to build up Dixie College. But Rose and others will be quick to point out that Dixies new status will have a far greater effect than just the simple avoidance of a question. Rather, it will impact Dixies academic reputation while increasing the chances of other programs coming to Dixie, enhance St. George's economy; most of all, it will provide the residents of Southern Utah an opportunity to further their education. According to Bill Fowler, Vice President of Student Services at Dixie State College, over 500 students have signed up for upper division courses this year. That is roughly 10 percent of the enrollment at Dixie State College this year. That tells you right there of the need that r we have had (for a program), said four-yea- Fowler. One cant blame Fowler and his colleagues for looking for justification for their decision to status. push ahead for four-yeIt is the only bill, to my knowledge, that has passed the House, the Senate, and was signed by the governor that had so much opposition, said Fowler. It was very political. It was opposed by the Regents. It was opposed by the other institutes of higher institution and many of the legislators. It seems almost like divine intervention that it was passed. The high number of students enrolled in Dixies baccalaureate programs could gamer the administration leverage in pushing for other degrees. Rose said that the school is looking into obtaining the right to offer degrees in speech pathology and education, both of which were proposed to the Board of Regents last year but were not included for this years curriculum. Rose said the college is also looking into other programs, including Health Sciences Administration. r time table for offerDixie has set a and a according to ing education as degree, two-yea- vi Rose, they may be able to offer another program as early as next year. But for now the focus of the college remains in getting the first two baccalaureate degrees up and running. The two degrees are in Business Administration and Computer and Information Technology. Both degrees are in fields that are budding with promise right now. Dixie graduates have had success in the business world over the years. Former Dixie College students have worked as the Chief Executive Officers of such companies as Ryder, Black & Decker, and Skywest. And the computer industry is, of course, the country's hottest industry right now. The students who are in these programs will not be entering growing fields, but according to Rose, they will receive excellent instruction to help them succeed. r programs) (The professors in the had experience in other schools; they were the outstanding professors in their other schools, said Rose. They're here for the right reason to teach, not to do research. r The faculty hopes that Dixies new status will not just lead to future academic success, but it will point to past successes, as well.
