Forensic team takes top piacirtgs in national tournament Sun News Services Despite a roster of first ime collegiate competitors, the )ixie College Forensics Squad returned home from the National Phi Rho Pi Speech Tournament in Atlanta with top piacings against two-- and four-yeschools from across the country. Squad president Amy Jensen took a gold in impromptu speaking and a bronze in extemp speaking. She was the only participant in impromptu to receive first place rankings from all three judges in the final round. Jensen ar and Lauren Steadmen also took a bronze in parliamentary debate. In the midst of a rebuilding year, Dixie has placed well in tournament competition leading up to the national conference. At the Ricks Viking Invitational in October, Julie Hinton and Can Clement took second in parliamentary debate and Hinton rang up an individual honor with a third place in speech entertainment. Michelle Salisbury also took second place in impromptu speaking and the team was awarded third place Dixie followed up with a strong showing at the Modesto meet in January where Salisbury and Kimball Forbes took third place in parliamentary debate and Salisbury was awarded sixth place as a debate speaker in addition to second place honors in programmed oral interp. The following month, Jensen and Steadman won a first place trophy at the Cerritos Tournament beating out Orange Coast College and Stephanie Grant took fourth place in speech to entertain. This year also marks the final Michael for year Woodward as coach of the forensics team, a post he has held for 25 years. Since 1 971 , he has watched the Dixie College program grow nto a national contender and under his guidance, the squad has taken the region tournament six years in a row, received top 10 national ranking and reached the final round at nationals three times in readers theatre (once with a parliamentary debate team making it to the finals the same year). In addition, he has received the national service award from the Phi Rho Pi organization. He also has survived THIS WSB1 many a hairy moment in traveling with the forensics team for a quarter of a century including rolling a van off an icy road into an embankment, getting stuck in an elevator on several different occasions, and collapsing at a tournament and being rushed to the hospital. Woodward will continue to instruct communication classes at the college and Enc Young, who has been acting as an adjunct professor and cocoach of the squad since 1995, will become the director forensics and take on status as an instructor. full-ti- of |
