'i0u seem to feel that the average riident, excepting those in disuplines specifically requiring mathematics, needs do little more than be able to balance a rieckbook. You are wrong. To say that any student who has not graduated from Dixie has a major, whether it's in reference to liberal arts, math, or otherwise is presumptuous. Majors are not offered here, it's simply a more socially acceptable way of asking what you want to be when you grow up. The whole idea behind general education is that the students classes in all take (or at least many) disciplines so they can develop their knowledge and appreciation of many subjects, develop a love for learning, and , in so doing, benefit society as a whole. In this way, Dixie is not "out of touch with its students." In fact, the college is doing its students a favor by adding the new requirement, whicn opens up avenues many educational unavailable to students who do not fulfill it why, just look at about any science class above the 101 level and you'll be fairly sure of running into an asterisk that tells you Math 105 is "upper-division- upper-division- 30-ye- ar Check out the St. George Movies guide on the net! http:www.intowest.commovies Effective V 6 May -- The Movies 214 North 1000 East Pall Bearer PG13 (4.30 Sat.) 7:00 4 9:00 2. Louise Excell Dear Editor: The May 28, 1996 editorial on Dixie's new math requirement prefaced it's remarks opposing the requirement with this question: "Math is important... but are upper division mathematics in college actually necessary for of liberal arts completion s, C matheedge, including a matics foundation. It seems absurd to me that, in an era of "dumbing down" of the American populace, an institution of higher learning like Dixie College would not be striving against that trend. The new math requirements aim at reversing that trend. mathematics Furthermore, has a practical application. Try to imagine the unthinkable, like some sort of catastrophic event; worldwide plague, nuclear holocaust, a huge asteroid plunging into earth, take your pick. Imagine the human survivors of such an event being plunged into a existenc- e- a kind of dark ages. Who do you want to put your world back together, to rebuild the communications, transportation and energy infrastructures? The history teacher? The British lit scholar? The attorney? As important as all of these might be (excepting, perhaps, the attorney) to the recreation of culture and civilization, we really would rely on those individuals with some knowledge of engineering, physics, mathematics, wouldn't we? Or would you rather start from scratch? Wild scenarios aside, I want to do more than just balance my checkbook, and I want a world of citizens who can do more, too.
