Gregerson, recendy completed for and was awarded her Doctor of ' Education degree, with honors graduating from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Professor Gregerson has taught at the St. George community college since 1961 when she was hired by Pres. Arthur Bruhn as his work "i ' j,- J' V - i secretary during the summer, and began teaching English and speech that fall quarter. She and her husband, Owen Louis Gregerson, have been 47 married nearly years. Mrs. Gregerson star ted work on the doctoral program in 1978 and completed all her class-worby the end oi Summer Quarter 1980. Her comprehensive examination was taken in October with the oral examination following in November. In Jan. of 81 she began work in earnest on her dissertation, a history of Dixie College from its early beginnings up to 1933. Much of her research was done in Salt Lake City, at the Utah Historical Society, the Utah State Archives, the LDS Church Historians Office and the Utah Education Association. The dissertation, which was finalized with an oral examination in November of last year, will now be to be put out as a book, that should be of great interest to scores of Southern Utahns and Dixie Alumni. She will be giving the book to Dixie College, with the stipulation that any proceeds derived therefrom be used to fund a scholarin ship program English. Another project she completed during her in doctoral study Nevada is the work entitled Destined to Succeed, One Hundred Years of Education in the Virgin Valley; which will also be published as a book with the proceeds going to provide English scholarships at UNLV. Prof. Gregerson Attributes her skill and love for writing to three of her teachers, one of Snow College with the others from her early days in school in Gunnison, Sanpete County. acShe became quainted with Lucy A. Phillips, at Snow College, in 1956. It was who Mrs. Phillips instilled in me a great desire to succeed in writing. seventh grade A Charlotte teacher, Billard and an elementary school reading teacher, Loretta Kidman, both taught me I could write and encouraged me to work to succeed. Also it was from Mrs. Billard that I gained a very exten sive background in 0 1960-61- . She moved to Dixie College in 1961, as noted earlier, and has been teaching there ever since. Mrs. Gregerson has traveled extensively during the summer vacations and has spent time in travel study programs through the BYU, in The Holy Land, Europe, and the Middle East and an around the world trip, all the while doing research and taking notes for a new career, after she retires from her teaching career, historical writing fiction. tors. Woolley, vice administrative president. Dr. Alton L. Wade, the college president, said Dixie College cannot meet its needs or reach its potential on the money now appropriated from the State. Without supplementary financial support from the community, and especially from loyal alumni, Dixie will not be able to maintain the quality or quantity of programs it now has. He continued, We have an urgent need to establish a permanent scholarship endowment fund so that we are not operating year after year from hand to mouth. Presently, we do not know whether we will have sufficient scholarship money to attract the kind of students we want here at Dixie College. We are certainly not in a very good scholarship position compared with some of our sister State Institutions. current years scholarship awards would use $30,000 with the remaining amount used to establish the endowment. In addition to graduating from Snow College in 1958 with an Associate of Arts degree, she graduated from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, with a B.A. degree, in 1960 and completed work on her Masters work there a year later and has done graduate work at the University of Washington, The University of Utah, Brigham Young University and finally the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her first teaching experience began with practice teaching at South Cache High School in Hyrum, Utah in 1958.
