Show September 22, 1961 THE DIXIE SUN Page 2 New Teachers RETROSPECTION AND LOOK FORWARD by A. Karl Larson The year 1961 is significant both at Dixie College and in the communities of Utahs Dixie. It is significant for St. George because it is just one hundred years ago this coming November 25th that William Fawcett and Robert now Thompson drove their wagons into the valley where St. George is comlocated. These men with their families were the vanguard of the pany of pioneers who arrived during the first week in December 1861 and built the city of St. George. Picture yourselves in their places, if that is in any way possible. They were almost entirely on their own resources, for it was well over 300 miles to Salt Lake City and nearly 500 miles from the Pacific coast, with the most primitive roads leading to either place. The soil was impregnated with alkali, and for thirty years a turbulent stream defied their efforts at controlling it for irrigation. Yet, control it they did, in the face of continuous perennial disaster; and the raw forces of nature that many times threatened their desruction, in the end became their means of sustenance. The pioneers made many mistakes, but they profited from their errors. They builded well. The evidence of their tenacity in seeking and creating the everlasting verities is seen in the homes, the highways, the fruitful fields, and in their temples of learning and worship. The sublimity of their idealism is revealed in the stately Tabernacle, finest art in the entire history of the Mormon example of the faith; m the splendid Temple which draws the eye of every traveler as he approaches this sheltered valley from any direction; and in the sturdy walls of the Dixie College Administration Building. chapel-builde- at Dixie College The womens physical education and dance instruction at Dixie will be headed this year by Miss Emily Roberts of Salt Lake City. Miss Roberts graduated June, 1961 from the University of Utah where she was Vice President of Orchesis dance group, and danced and choreographed for many student productions. She has taught dancing in Salt Lake City and has done some professional dancing. Miss Roberts spent this summer at college in Colorado Springs, where she studied under broadway dance choreographer, Hayna Holm. She should do an excellent job here at Dixie with all her experience and qualifications. Miss Roberts is proudly wearing a diamond ring which she received on August 24. Her objective: to educate the community to artistic and recreational dance and then get married. rs These things are the physical manifestations of the spiritual force which has been the motivating influence in this valley since the Pioneers entered it one hundred years ago. is a significant year for Dixie Nineteen hundred and sixty-onJust fifty years ago this September this institution was created by the same devotion and sacrifice which built the Tabernacle and Temple. The Pioneers built these structures because they hated crudeness and ignorance, and because they loved knowledge, learning, and beauty. On them they lavished all their love of the things that for them constituted the Good Life. e College also. These things they have left to you, the students of Dixie College. They did it because they wanted their own children and you to grow physically, intellectually, and spiritually to the full limits of your possibilities. They were never satisfied with mediocrity themselves, and they would not expect you to be different. As you begin your work on the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of this great institution, remember that its founders rightly expect you to do the best that you are capable of achieving.
