Food and Nutrition Demonstration The class in food and nutrition under the able management of Miss Ward gave a most excellent exhibit of the standard 100 calorie portions of the ordinary foods. The table was covered with a display including liquids, cereals (dry and cooked), fruits, vegetables, puddings, cakes, etc., and many opened their eyes in astonishment when they saw the heaping plate of lettuce by the tiny piece of pumpkin pie(l-l- 5 of a pie was 100 calorie portion) and the huge platter of celery, by the suet pudding, a piece nearly as large as an ordinary coat button. Three tea spoons of sugar was found to equal two large rosy apples, and a piece of beef about 2 by 3 inches was equivalent to a large parsnip in fuel value. Did this exhibit tell you anything? Didnt you gasp for breath when you thought of the quantity of sugar and cream you were want to use upon your fruit, mush, etc. ? And didnt you feel a relief when you saw how freely you could eat fruits and vegetables without being fearful of your fuel demand? That the demonstration was appreciated was testified to by the large number who came, looked and wondered, then began calculating their meals in 100 calorie portions.
