time One notable form of hospitality is to invite guests from the Jewish past into the sukkah Every night a different Jewish patriarch — Abraham Isaac Jacob Joseph Moses Aaron and David — is invited to join the meal "By invoking the memory of these deeply spiritual figures we are living on two planes — the present and the past" Walton said "And we want to learn their virtues and practice them in our dealings with others especially our guests in the sukkah" In the Torah 70 bulls were brought to the temple in Jerusalem during this festival and sacrificed to bring about peace in all the nations The second to last day of Sukkot is known Shimini Atseret which means -- to tarry" Jews believe that God wants the people of Israel to stay longer with him rather than return to their work routine And the final day is Simchat Torah rejoicing of the sacred book Sukkot Commemorates Jews Pilgrimage From Egypt 1 h By Peggy Fletcher Stack 4 Y Just five days after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holy Days the religious community is beginning another holiday Starting Monday Jews will celebrate Sukkot one of three pilgrim festivals commemorating life during the time of Israelite exodus During the seven-daholiday observant Jews take all their meals in a booth or "sukkah" It is a temporary structure usually with three sides high enough for a person to stand in covered with cut branches and decorated with hanging fruits and vegetables "This is the fall pilgrimage festival" said Rabbi Frederick Wenger of Salt Lake's Congregation Kol Ami "The sukkah booth is reminiscent of the huts in which our ancestors dwelled as they traveled from Egypt to the land of Israel" 4 e i - sl e e -- 1 4 '1 :1 e i '1 -- '4 - patio "We build it we eat in it we sleep in it all to relive the history of the Jewish people It makes the experience of our ancestors more real" The Torah Judaism's sacred book instructs worshipers to bring four types of produce — traditionally the etrog (a citrus fruit) myrtle palm branch and willow — to be blessed on each day of the festival Believers shake the branches "to heaven to the earth and to the four directions of the compass" y 4 t Michael Walton a member of Salt Lake's Orthodox community affectionately dubs Sukkot the festival of "flimsy little temporary lean-tos- " He and his family will build a sukkah on their THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE e s a A S 1 Walton said A number of interpretations have been offered for the meaning of the four species One has to do with shape The palm which looks like a spine is said to symbolize action and courage The etrog which looks like a heart suggests feelings The myrtle the leaf of which resembles an eye symbolizes awareness and understanding The will the leaf of which looks like a mouth might symbolize truth The custom has "layers and layers of meaning" Walton said "It connects us at this time of harvest with the earth and God as nourisher "It is a time for rejoicing" Wenger said "And it was the inspiration for the American festival of Thanksgiving" On Sunday members of Kol Ami will build and decorate their sukkah and on Monday they will bless the fruit of the vine grape juice or wine Hospitality is an important aspect of the Sukkot 1 4 I 1 8575 S 700 East is having a "classy rags sale" today from 9 am to 2:30 pm II Mount Tabor Lutheran Church 175 S 700 East Salt Lake City will Assembly Church since August 1992 Some neighbors say they don't like the singing preaching and amplified music from the 150member congregation — especially in summer when the church windows are open The singing has been accompanied by electric guitar and drums Lyonel Norris an attorney who lives across the street from the church said he has had trouble working in his home because of the constant noise His daughter calls the church "the singing house" and doesn't want to go to sleep at night when she hears it But church members say the neighborhood doesn't understand their joyful style of worship "This is lively praising shipping We tion't feel like our praise of God should be limited by man" said Marie Hill the pas tor's wife Hill has been ticketed a number of times for violating the city's noise ordinance After he failed to show up for a court date in August authorities issued a bench warrant for his arrest Hill said he was out of town at the time of his court appearance City Council member Steve Mimi has arranged for the installation of storm windows at no cost to the church and is raising funds for air conditioning so that church members won't need to open windows on hot days Not everyone in the neighborhood complains about the noise however "It's beautiful" said neighbor Tracey Racette "It's gorgeous I happen to love it I hear happy happy voices and great music It's loud but it's not obnoxious it's not like a jackhammer" y Church 363-555- FIRST CHURCH SUN SCHOOL & SCHOOL I' i0c!J:1: 441 l'Nii'4144 f & 1306 qf7-4- i :' sacrifices '''' toe-- D Jeff t-- 0' ' ' tv1:-
