Slow His ife's tectic ace In Detroit Will Preach Full Time in Memphis J Gilchirst NEWS SERVICE KNIGHT-RIDDE- Every six months or so Benjamin Hooks reads "Robinson Crusoe" He is fascinated by the story of the shipwrecked man who used will and ingenuity to survive for years on a deserted island "To me it's the essential story of a person pitting himself against the odds and He could have given up but surviving he didn't" During four decades of public life Hooks faced his own tough challenges and survived For 30 years through a law practice a judgeship tenure on the Federal Communications Commission and at the head of the NAACP Hooks simultaneously pastored at two churches nearly 800 miles apart He hasn't had a vacation in two decades and knows cities by their airports and hotels because there was never time to peruse the museums or enjoy the social life His life was full of days and countless nights away from his Memphis home An era came to an end Sunday when Hooks preached his last sermon as pastor of Greater New Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Detroit He is going home full time to Middle Baptist Church in Memphis although he will retain the title of pastor emeritus at Mount Moriah 18-ho- DOD "My Religion Hard Work": Benjamin Lawson Hooks has often been asked why he has given so much of himself "I can't explain why except it's my life" he says "I prayed hard always that I was doing the will of God and not just something I wanted to do" years have turned his thick hair to straight thinning white strands and his short frame carries a few more pounds Hooks says he's slowing down — sort of After a recent long Saturday he was up until 4 am first talking then preparing his sermon He had returned to Memphis about 8:30 Saturday night from a luncheon speech in Biloxi Miss After a few hours sleep he strolled into the kitchen of his condo in downtown Memphis about 8:30 dressed for church except for the finely woven robe he was Sixty-nin- e wavy black wearing over his white shirt a tie and gray slacks His wife had fried him a breakfast of chicken wings and pork chops he's on a diet to lose the 15 pounds he has gained since leaving the NAACP a year ago The short hours of sleep did not show at breakfast nor when he stepped to the rostrum at Middle Baptist and thundered out his message whisking the congregation away on a spiritual cloud He had two other appointments later that evening including a guest sermon at another Memphis church That schedule seemed light compared to what it has been the past 30 years "I've just been a person who worked hard That was my religion hard work" says Hooks In his early teens Hooks gave up the usual activities of youth and retreated into a world of reading studying the Bible and talking to the elders of the community His older sister Julia Gordon says Hooks' serious demeanor earned him the nickname "judge" and his love of the Bible had some calling him "Jacob" When Hooks wasn't working at his father's photography studio he was across the hall talking to one of the only black attorneys in town He says he has always enjoyed talking to older people learning about history and hearing about their experiences "I just didn't enjoy a lot of superficial talk and older people were just more serious minded" Hooks says Peter Scarlet 4 5444 el A f 11 '"": - IF THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE A former missionary the ministry Hooks got his first church in March 1956 It was Middle Baptist One job was never enough for him In the 1950s and '60s even as he was pastoring at Middle Baptist the young lawyer was immersed in the national civil rights movement with Dr Martin Luther King Jr He represented jailed protesters plotted strategy and organized demonstrations He had no intention of coming to Detroit but when Mount Moriah said they needed him he consented and began commuting between Memphis and Detroit in 1964 Within months of accepting the position at Mount Moriah he was appointed to Tennessee's Shelby County Criminal Court becoming the first black judge in the South since Reconstruction The next term year he was elected to an eight-yea-r Of the appointment Hooks says: "It was very clear that if I didn't accept the appointment it would be a long time before blacks got another chance Don't ask me how God works like that" Some weeks he would leave Memphis on Friday after work in court fly to Detroit meet with church officials counsel members preach on Sunday and fly back to Memphis in time to be on the bench Monday morning The routine got only more complex after his appointment by President Nixon in 1972 to the FCC and in 1977 when he left the commission to become executive director of the NAACP Although Hooks was officially on leave from both churches during his years with the FCC and NAACP he usually kept his commit good-lookin- talk about issues of the day Gordon says that by the time he reached his late teens she knew her brother was going to be a preacher "We all went to Sunday school every Sunday but he just got more out of it" she says Around the house he would retell sermons and Bible stories "He always had the gift" she says Frances Dancy Hooks his wife of 43 years remembers that when they socialized with other young couples one of her girlfriends would point at "Benny" draw an imaginary square in the air and burst out laughing If he took her to a dance she had to agree to attend a civic meeting or church gathering Her friends couldn't believe g Frances was really going to marry such a dud Although the Hooks and Dancy families knew each other the two Mormon who subsequently became an evangelical Christian is the author of The Changing World of Mormonism and Mormonism: Shadow or Reality She will discuss the concept of truth in Mormon culture in two talks: "Truth and Honesty in Mormonism" and "How LDS People Deal with Truth" Crump pastor of Immanuel Church in Salt Lake City and IIIBS's New Testament instructor will speak on "Knowing the Truth" and "Being Liberated by the Truth" His remarks will be built around the gospel of John nt Pope Disappoints Supporters of Ordination MI Continued from C-- 1 will follow One possibility may be to initiate "liturgies of protest" at churches while another is to intensify a campaign already under way to have supporters of women's ordination wear blue ribbons — akin to the red AIDS awareness ribbons "Something like this was to be expected" said the Rev Richard John Neuhaus the who heads the New York-base- d Institute on Religion and Public Life "It will create keen disappoint- ment among a small but influential group the Catholic academic establishment" he said "But this is historically part of what it means to be a Catholic Christian You are aware of the limits that bear upon being in full commu priests A lesser factor Neuhaus said was the need for the church to make ever clearer its position in light of the Church of England's ordaining women as priests Following the March 12 ordinations the Vatican said ordaining women was a "very deep obstacle" to eventual unity between the Catholic church and the worldwide Anglican Communion whose mother church is the Church of England Fitzpatrick said she believes the timing of the papal letter was largely due to the Anglican ordinations and served as "a quiet invitation" for the Anglicans who oppose women serving as priests to join the Catholic church Hooks and his wife Frances live in a condominium in downtown Memphis The Mississippi River winds past their front windows and they can watch cars cross the bridge to Arkansas The place is elegant but not spotless For many years his schedule has been her schedule So when she can squeeze in the dishes and the dusting she does She washes irons and starches his shirts The family car is a minivan Frances Hooks is barely 5 feet tall thin as a whip but sturdy Her evenly bronze face glows and is framed by dark shoulder-length hair Her voice is penetrating Keeping up with her is not for those short of breath For all these years she has coordinated his speaking engagements made his airline reservations answered his letters and been his consultant She helped raise their adopted daughter who was the child of one of Hooks' brothers They now have two grandchildren She gave up a career as a teacher counselor and daycare center owner to help him out ODD Stung by Criticism: His schedule was difficult and she wasn't sure a secretary would always be available when he needed something done "Who better to awaken at 2 am than his wife" At the NAACP Baltimore
