Show I Alt3 I The Salt Lake Tribune I1 - Forrest C Crawford Last August 75000 Americans from across the nation Uncluthng Utahns) participated in the 30th celebration of the anni ersa-historic It)63 civil rights march on Washington Utah no less enthusiastic in its "amen to the cause" successfully shaped the meaning of this event for its special purpose as well Led by the state's Martin Luther King Jr Human Rights Commission Salt Lake City added the name "Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard" to the 600 South exit from Interstate 15 in honor of that great American On the surface the project seemed a relatively safe and uneventful request The commission submitted a petition to the Salt Lake City mayor and city council requesting that this honorary gesture be a component in a series of commemorative activities The activities would eventually be capped by a small (200 plus) but enthusiastic representative group that marched from Liberty Park to the City and County Building "Uneventful" however proved an inaccurate characterization The 600 South issue quickly attracted a diversity of responses ranging from "horrifying" to "a petili on v hose time has come" Our media continued interest in the matter reporting opinions printing editorials and covering meetings on the MLK request As the issue unfolded it was apparent that adding King's name to 600 South was symbolic of the many sentiments the name Martin Luther King Jr still evokes in the hearts and minds of Salt Lake City citizens "He's unfit" "Why somebody black?" and "He's never been to Utah" heralded some thinking More volatile opinions surfaced as personal telephone calls and threats were made to some of our local leaders Providing a striking contrast were comments like "It's time" "A state holiday now a state street — yeah!" and "Why not honor our Nobel Prize winner for peace?" In the final analysis the people spoke with a loud and compelling voice rarely heard in our otherwise benign interactions with each other: 600 South would also be known as "Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard" a transforming "Amen" Utah style While detailed memories of the highs and lows of that campaign slowly fade I have come to realize that this issue was not the typical By - I y ti grf public debate The ready availability of handstreets guns has made inner-cit- y wilder and more dangerous than the wild West ever was and has given our country an international reputation as being a violent place The Brady bill is a light of sanity in the insane darkness of uncontrolled gun use in this country I hope the day is not far off when handguns will be totally GEORGIA DAVIS Salt Lake City our community let their voices be known The effect? The dying patients being less than perfect humans were treated as subhuman In another study radioactive milk was given to pupils at a school for retarded children The rationale here seems to have been that the retarded children being imperfect humans were a subhuman species that could be used as laboratory animals The same rationale was used to justify horrific medical experiments upon the inmates of Nazi concentration camps And the same rationale is seen by critics of fetal research in the experimental use of pieces of aborted fetuses Point of Law cells from aborted fetuses was announced Researchers at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center will remove a piece of the brain of aborted fetuses and extract brain cells for injec bon into the brains of Parkinson's Disease patients result is that the The hoped-fo- r implanted brain cells of a type that produces the brain chemical dopamine will make up for the loss of these type of cells in the brains of the Parkinson's patients A worthy end But there are those who question the ethical validity of the means What the executive branch of the government has been doing is legislating law by administrative order and regulation This is never a good practice in a field that is very sensitive to public opinion and this is one of the more publicly sensitive issues of our time in yoking not only delicate questions Somebody needs to make a public protest against that sacrilegious Whoopi Goldberg movie "Sister Act" The Catholic nuns don't deserve such a stupid portrayal I had them as teachers Their spiritual influence !I remain forever They excel in classroom instruction because they demand the best The strict basic grammar I learned from them enhanced my federal career of 38 years Hollywood is a great source of sleaze and should remain in its realm of depicting questionable morals AIELDA RENVILLE Brigham City Richard Henry Lee 1788: "A militia when properly formed are in fact the people themselves and include all men capable of bearing arms To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms" GARY BILLS Sandy 9 t research the awarding of the first such post-ba- n grants for research using Unfair to Nuns ' Ogden Utah 84408 Mr Crawford is chairman of the Utah Martin Luther King Jr Human Rights Commission The article expresses positions of the commission A year after President Clinton h g man" ''' Experiments Treat Fetuses as Subhuman announced an end to the Reagan-Busban on government grants gram where police officers on the ground actually occupy and become familiar with the area where police presence is needed Where did that come from? police department has distinguished itself with unprofessionalism over all the years I have lived in Utah There have been many incidents but I'll recall just a few First there was the racetrack affair where the West Valley cops stirred up a riot and then had to call for help to quell it Then they terrorized a dog in its own yard for an hour till it attacked out of pure panic and frustration Then they killed it And don't forget the time they initiated the warrant on the house where there were no drugs and killed the resident Then came PhotoCop the most disgraceful crass plan ever initiated by a govemment agency The idea of a double-- own What I continue to think about is how Martin Luther King Boulevard has been a turning point a defining moment not just for the King Commission but for Utah in general I am humbly reflective about how this event has come to symbolize the hopes and aspirations of many of our citizens And though I am no stranger to local political processes it was also to see quite frankly the support and hear the opposition as people engaged in public dialogue It renewed my appreciation of the vital role our ecclesiastical communities play and of how potent traditional civil rights and grassroots organizations are in the context of bringing life to our local affairs It was also reaffirming to learn how significant can be the impact of involving city county and state government in the decision-makinprocess It was enlightening to recognize the role of city and campus newspapers as well as groups like the West Valley Cops spaced lent crimes are
