Show Oiuc in the (,amc, Yoti'ro on Your Own Tht Sail Lake Tribune, Friday, October 24, 19K6 A5 Family Name Doesn't Assure Win in Elections By Steve Gerstel United Press International But you won't find it on the Deiio cratic line WASHINGTON In polities, as in other careers, the family name can get you in the game, but the heirs of some of America s most illustrious families have to win on their own on this hleciion Day The election ballots are sprinkled with some of the great names in American politics - some on the national scene and others on a state level - as a new generation seeks to make its own mark For some it could be the first rung on the ladder of politics; for others, the end of a political career. The names are familiar: Kennedy, Stevenson, Wallace, Scranton, Docking and others As Mark Johnson, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Committee, said early in this years political season, the family name can make for a credible candidacy" but is "no guarantee of election. "If Nixon had a kid who ran, it wouldn't help," he said. One of the most enduring of all names in American politics is Stevenson, and once again, it is on the ballot. Adlai Stevenson III, son of a two-tim- e presidential candidate, of a vice president and himself a former senator, is running for governor in Illinois as the candidate of the Illinois Solidarity Party Stevenson, trapped by the primary on the Democratic slate with two followers of radical Lyndon Larouche as running mates, ditched his unwanted allies to form a third party. But Stevenson, who might have run a close race under normal circumstances, is now rated as a decided underdog against Gov. James Thompgreat-grandso- n son. There are two Kennedys running Joseph Kennedy II in Massachusetts and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend in Maryland. They are the children of Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew and niece of President John Kennedy and Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts. Joseph Kennedy is considered the favorite to beat Republican Clark Abt in Massachusetts 8th District, once President Kennedys seat, but Kathleen Townsend is in a tough, pos for Congress sibly losing race against Rep Helen Bentley, a Republican veteran. Although not a national name, Docking is magic in Kansas. Lt Gov Thomas Docking, son of a four-tergovernor and grandson of a two-tergovernor, is the Democratic candidate for governor. Docking is locked in an extremely tight race against Republican Mike Hayden, Speaker of the Kansas House. There are two duels of the dynasties, one in South Dakota and one in Indiana George Mickelson, whose father, George T , was governor from 1947 until 1953, is the Republican candidate for governor in South Dakota. His Democratic opponent is Lars Herseth, whose father, Ralph Her-setgoverned the state from 1959 until 1961. In Indiana, Republican Robert Otis Bowen, son of former governor and now Reagan Cabinet official, Dr. Otis Bowen the secretary of Health and Human Services, is running against Democrat Evan Bayh, son of former Sen. Birch Bayh, for secretary of state. - Lt Gov William Scranton III, son of former governor and candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, is ii. a tight race against Democratic Attorney General Bob Casey. Republican Pete Simpson, brother of Sen. Alan Simpson and son of former Sen. Milward Simpson, is in a close race against Democrat Michael Sullivan for governor of Wyoming John Rhodes III, son of former House Republican leader John Rhodes, is trying to claim his father seat in Arizona's 1st District in a race against Harry Braun III George Wallace Jr. son of fourtime governor and four-timpresidential candidate George Wallace, is favored to become Alabamas next state treasurer and Jim Folsom Jr., son of two-tergovernor Big Jim" Folsom is the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor. And in Atlanta, Martin Luther King III, son of the slain civil rights leader, is making his first political campaign, running for the Fulton County Commission. e Cwls 237-200- 0 In other races.
