IWfi January Saturday Morning Most Church Services Lack Help for Deaf By Mclindj Sowerby rihuni HHigiun Kdilor The deal have long been ncglrck'd when it comes to having access o worship Although churches arc becoming aware of this failing, there still aren't many options available One option in the Salt Lake City area is through the Rocky Mountain Deaf Ministry Jr also known as the Salt Lake Christian Corner's Deaf a ministry still strugMinistry gling, but growing Denise Bienz. one of two for the small congregation. has seen both physical and spiritual growth since she first took a course in sign language li1 years ago Only about JO people attend the Sunday evening worship services for the deaf Sign language is provided for a smaller number w ho attend regular worship services Sunday morning and a Sunday school class Yet. Mrs Bienz has seen spiritual growth in those who do attend The idea for the deaf ministry had its beginnings about five years ago when Valley Assembly of God offered sign language interpreting in its regular worship services. About Vi years ago. a class in signing was offered at the Salt Lake Christian Center "As in most cases, there were a lot of people signing up for the course T coordina-tors'inlerpreter- s to begin with and then it kind of dwin- dled until there were only four of us that stuck to it," Mrs. Bienz said Even to Mrs. Bienz, it seems strange that she and the others stayed with the class and started the ministry. She explained. "I'm hearing, with no deaf family members, and I knew nothing of their culture. Yet, she believes God wanted her involved with the deaf "It's the Lord putting me in that position God often uses someone with no qualifications. He likes to use ordinary people." she believes She became so involved, she even took a course in psychology for the deaf At first, the ministry seemed doomed There were no deaf people coming and Mrs Bienz said organizers didn't know how to reach out to the deal community "We spent almost a ye..r interpreting at all the services, with nobody no deaf people there but the walls." She said because she and Vivian "Cookie" Olsen, the other interpreter, were inexperienced in signing, it was a mental struggle. "On one hand we yearned for someone to attend, hut on the other hand we prayed. 'Oh. God, not this week!' Then they arranged for the Rev- Catholics Date Services for King Birthday Hod Renusch. who is associated with the Rocky Mountain Deaf Ministry in Denver, to come and s)ouk "We made up flyers and passed them around and had an announcement printed in the I tali Association for the Deaf newsletter!." Mrs Bienz said. Only about 15 to 20 people attended that service, but it was a start. Now the Rev. Mr. Renusch draws the deaf of many denominations to the Christian Center when he makes his Tin r.K liolu- Dioci'si of Suit Ldkt City vwll reiinMiilMT Dr M.irtm l.u tiler Kiiik in a number of w.ivv beginning wnh llie eelebruiion ol un eve- ning M.tKN ul Surred Heart Church. 948 S 2(10 Kasl, on Jan. at 5 30 p m II The Most Hov John Iticard. auxiliary bishop of Baltimore and one of 10 black Catholic bishops in the United Stales, will celebrate the Mass with Bishop William K. Arm Jacobson, pastor of the Christian Center, generally conducts the regular Sunday morning worship, while Mrs. Olsen "signs." Mrs Bienz coordinates the evening meeting which she terms a "teaching service." In addition, the church borrows video tapes from an organization specializing in Christian tapes for the deaf Now that the group is established, it has its own choir which performed at the Cottonwood Mall and the ZCMI Center over the holidays. The choir sings and signs the music. She believes the choir members see it as an opportunity to serve God. and as choir director she has found members often enjoy performing solos. The group recently held its first communion service. In addition, the deaf congregation helped a needy deaf family over Christmas and put on a Christmas pageant. "We're on our knees praying for a pastor," Mrs. Bienz said. When she says a pastor, she means a minister, who is also deaf someone who understands the deaf better than she does. "Sometimes because of the differences in the culture between the hearing and deaf we dont communicate well." She said she can sign, but sometimes has trouble understanding the deaf when they are talking with her. because they sign so fast "They've been patient with us." she I k The group, for people either in the process of being divorced or have been divorced, will build upon the strengths of group members in inskills and problem-solving creasing assisting group members grieving separation process in the - Special to The Tribune A "Faith Sharing Evangelism" workshop for members and friends of Shared Ministry churches statewide will be held at Hilltop United Methodist Church. 985 E. 10800 South.
