Here's a guy that hasn't been overruled in his majority opinions once by the I’nited States Supreme Court" Simpson said Simpson vowed that if Bork opponents want to bring up "what a guy was doing when he was 30 I'm ready to do that and I would do that with all of the inquisitors including the witnesses “So if we’re just going to spend our time looking at old law review articles what text he wrote in 1962 then I’m going to do a little smoking of my own” But Ralph Neas executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights said “The best evidence against confirmation will be Bork’s record what he has written and said and done over the past 30 years There is a paper trail that goes back three decades and that paper trail cannot be altered forgotten or ’’ A-- Among the sitting justices only Day O'Connor hacat least a third of respondents voicing an opinion about them More than two thirds of respondents had no opinion about Chief Justice William Rehnquist Twenty-threpercent had a favorable opinion of Rehnquist 9 percent had an unfavorable opinion and 68 percent had no opinion O’Connor received a favorable opinion from 34 percent of respondents while 4 percent had an unfavorable opinion dnd 62 percent had no opinion Twenty-twpercent of respondents thought the Supreme Court was too liberal while 21 percent thoughf it was too conservative Forty percent thought it was neither too liberal or too conservative io Justice Sandra ft ft Activists Hopeful !&k Recall of Mecham Picks Up Steam Party Chairman Burt Kruglick Buck a Republican is an avowed ho- mosexual The recall kicked off on July 6 six months after Mecham took office and the first day it could legally do so Volunteers have until Nov 3 to collect signatures from 216746 registered voters and force a recall election To date 182264 signatures have been gathered In the eight months since he has taken office Mecham a former car dealer who won election to the state’s highest office on his fifth try has alienated blacks Hispanics women and homosexuals with I is remarks Some of his appointments have been rejected by the Republican-con-trolle- d state Senate while others won confirmation despite strong opposition However Mecham 63 has received the most publicity for his decision to rescind the state holiday honoring the Rev Martin Luther King Jr Mecham later declared the third Sunday in January a civil rights day Mecham said his predecessor Democratic presidential hopeful Bruce Babbitt did not have the authority to create a holiday Mecham also has questioned whether the slain civil rights leader is worthy of a paid holiday The governor has been lambasted for defending the use of the word “pickaninny” for remarking that working women have contributed to the rise in the divorce rate and for saying he would like to see a list of homosexuals who work in state government Since the recall drive began Mecham has gone on the offensive Public speeches have been mostly limited to prepared remarks on his administration’s accomplishments Reporters’ questions which often elicited his most controversial responses are answered with a “no comment” Then a “Doonesbury” cartoon strip lampooning Mecham for his remarks about blacks and homosexuals ap- -
