Show 2B The Salt Lake Tribune Monday January 19 1987 Today’s No Holiday for lawmakers Continued From unsuccessful attempt at the US Day Those alternatives sparked criticisms that if Utah had a day called Human Rights Day or Utah People’s Day while the rest of the country observed Martin Luther King Jr Day it would hurt the state’s image and Sen- ate last year Some of the Republican lawmakers who proposed alternative bills to that of Sen Wiliams like Rep Robert Sykes and Rep Moss are also gone The original bill as proposed by Sen Williams last year would have created the King holiday and taken away what is commonly referred to as an' employee-preferenc- the day honoring the 16th US president with the day honoring George Washington also in February That day is now known as Presidents’ Day That final compromise sparked some of the most heated debate with one representative stating to the House “I don’t think Martin Luther King was a better man than Abraham Lincoln and I bet you don’t think so Human Rights Day or Utah People’s B- -l e hamper economic development and tourist promotion efforts A final compromise version of the bill created the holiday in observance of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr but included wording that would have the day known “also as Human Rights Day” to honor all civil rights efforts The final successful bill had the holiday replace Abraham Lincoln’s birthday in February and combined day which each worker can take off with pay sometime during the year But several lawmakers were offended at naming a civil rights day after Dr King and some alternative bills were introduced that would create a holiday of a different name like either” The bill passed the Senate 19-- 6 with four senators absent It passed 0 the House with 11 absent Half the legislators who voted 44-2- against the bill were defeated last A fall in their attempts at third of the Legislature is new this year and were not around for all the controversy last year
