Show Utah Family Feeds Malnourished African Children By Melinda Simrrbv Tribune Church Kdilor Dr. Lurry Sandberg's family spent three months in Africa, feeding malnourished children, testing the children's blood and offering them the love of Christ The family, including wife Joyce and daughters Beth and Stephanie, spent much of the lime in Liberia working on a pilot project on protein markers of severe malnutrition for a University of Utah research project. The project is under the direction of Dr. Sandberg, a pathologist with the University of Utah and chief of chemistry at the Veterans Administration Medical Center The Sandbergs worked on the project as a family team, according to Mrs. Sandberg, a registered nurse who serves as staff development coordinator for Wasatch Villa Convalescent Center in Salt Lake City. Look for Healthy, Too For the project, the family not only had to find malnourished children, feed them and care for them, but they also had to find healthy youngsters for a counterstudy. While Dr. and Mrs. Sandberg took blood samples from the children and ran preliminary tests, daughters Beth, 18, and Stephanie, 13, were meabusy taking circumference surements of the childrens heads and arms, as well as measuring height and weight. The teens also were the ones who sought out the healthy youngsters for the study. We were all on the go from early morning until late in the evening, they said. The malnourished children were first fed an electrolyte solution. Mrs. Sandberg said the parents were then given just one day's supply of milk. The Sandbergs were then assured the parents would bring their youngexaminatsters back for follow-uions. Mrs, Sandberg also spent time educating parents on nutrition, she said, explaining to them how to create nourishing meals from foods readily available. p Additional Samples Once preliminary blood tests were run, Mrs. Sandberg said, additional blood samples were quick frozen and sent to the United States for furthur testing. Although the final results of the tests wont be known for about a vear, Mrs. Sandberg believes almost 80 percent of the youngsters they treated were cured. The results of the familys work will be of help to children throughout the world, not just in Africa, Mrs. Sandberg said. She believes the results of the testing may also help in her field of specialty geriatrics since so many older people are malnourished. The children the family treated are still under the care of a physician. They werent left high and dry, Mrs. Sandberg emphasized. The Sandbergs went to Africa as Christians, but they didn't go to proselytize, and as a medical team they worked with Christians and alike. Mrs. Sandberg Bible Seminar Set at Center "The Bible for Today Workshop," a seminar for inquisitive, intuitive people'- who want to learn to discover the Bible for themselves, will be held Saturday from 10 a m. until 2 p.m. at the Unity Center of Salt Lake, 62 E. 4800 South. The seminar will be conducted by the Ftev. Curt Jantz and the Rev. Kathy Jantz. pastors at the center. The Rev. Mr. Jantz explained the - seminar Churches gait fake eribunr Sflje for "inquisitive, intuitive people, who want to learn how the Bible relates to them." Mrs Sandberg said ' Family Feels Calling Sandberg said the entire family felt it was Cod's calling for them to reach out and be his disciples. "What the world needs, is a baptism of love where we could reach out in love to everyone, she said The natives would thank the Sandbergs for whatever food was given, but. Mrs. Sandberg said, "we told them to thank the Lord who really provided it. She said an example of that hunger for the Lord was found in neighhard hit by a boring Guinea where the natives actualdrought ly ran for the Bibles that were dropped by air with a shipment of food, before they grabbed the food. The Sandbergs have known for a number of years they wanted to study malnutrition in Africa. Mrs. Sandberg explained five years ago her husband attended a conference on malnutrition at the Mayo Clinic. There he learned of the tragedy of malnutrition. "Larry developed a real burden for the children, Mrs. Sandberg said. Poster on Malnutrition He brought a poster on malnutrition from the conference, which the couple hung in their bedroom, and they prayed for the chance to do something. But it seemed each year the doors were closed on the means to go to Africa. That is. until 1983, "when the Lord said this is the year, Mrs. Sandberg said. But grants for the project were still not forthcoming and after much prayer, the Sandbergs shared their plight with friends. Then, money came in from many sources, mostly in small amounts, to feed the youngsters. Dr. Sandberg received a grant to work on the protein project and took a sabbatical leave. Once in Africa, money seemed to come in when the family most needed it and when $690 came in after a spaghetti dinner was held as a fundraiser for them, "I just wept, Mrs. Sandberg said. Mrs. ' Family Lives Simply While in Africa, the Sandbergs lived simply, on the same food as the fish and fruit. Byrun sunderman has wanted to be a minister since he was in third grade His identity with the minis-- t was so strong that even ry throughout high school he was MURRAY called "Preacher. He was ordained Sunday at Christ Lutheran Church, 240 E. 5600 South and installed as assistant pastor. His desire to be a pastor came from a strong Lutheran background. "My father desired the ministry, but couldnt afford it." the Rev. Sunderman said. "That strong religious training began a growing process, an educational process in me that took years to develop. My desire to become a minister didnt spring suddenly upon me." While in the seminary he questioned his decision to become a minister. "I took six months off to think about it, but I wanted it bad enough I went back, he said. Looking back, he gives a lot of credit to the people in his hometown church in Sweeney, Texas, who supported him and later to his wife who sacrificed a lot and helped him through seminary. The Rev. Sunderman said he enjoys being with people and believes he makes an honest attempt at understanding people. Because of his desire to work with people, his duties will fall mainly in the areas of pastoral care (hospital visitations and visits to shut-insyouth ministry, ministering to young adults and preaching. He said he believes his preaching style is dynamic and that tnrough his sermons he tries to bring out the excitement and conviction he has for the Gospel. He admits its a challenge to do that on a regular basis.
