Victor Bonnell is entering a new phase of his pastoral career the prison ministry. who started Saints Peter and Paul Church, 3580 W. 3050 South, over 10 years ago, has recently received a new assignment from the Most Rev. William K. Weigand, bishop of the Catholic diocese of Suit Lake. Beginning Doc. 1, Father Bonnell will become the Catholic chaplain at the Utah State Prison, the Salt Lake County Detention Center, area halfway houses and the Youth Detention Father Bonnell, (inter. Plan Honor Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul vull honor Father Bonnell durmg a Farewell Open House Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p m. at Saint Francis Parish Hall, 4501 W. 5215 South Father Bonnell began Saints Peter and Paul Parish Aug. 1, 1972, taking members primarily from St. Francis Parish and also from St. Patricks Parish. There were problems with the fledgling congregation mainly that there was no place to meet. We had nothing, Father Bonnell said and Father Bonnell was even having difficulty finding a suitable place for a rectory, because he w anted a house that could be used as a residence and where daily Mass could be held. As Father Bonnell and the real estate agent were looking around, they stopped in front of a house on impulse and Father Bonnell found the house ideal. A house, the building had a finished basement perfect for holding weekday Mass. A room originally built as a recreation room w as used as a chapel, seating 12 to 14 people. The basement had a separate entrance from the upstairs opening into an anteroom which the previous owner had equipped with a closet, storage area and even a shelf everything the father needed to vest." Mass in Rectory And Father Bonnell held daily Mass in the rectory for over two , tri-lev- el years. But there remained the problem of where to hold Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Father Bonnell an estigated the local Eagles Lodge and ZCMI department store. Both but "graciously offered rooms both had their drawbacks. Father Bonnell also investigated recreation centers at mobile home parks, but those rooms were rejected, too. Finally, he investigated school auditoriums, but it was the policy of the Granite School District not to allow churches to use schools. Father Bonnell was discouraged and worried about where the congregation was going to meet when "out of the blue, Dick Trentman, the area supervisor for Weight Watchers and a member of St. Ann's Parish called to offer Father Bonnell the use of the Weight Watcher's building in Granger. So for two years the 200 met at the center, in many ways a good place for a beginning parish. Payment Refused Father Bonnell said the parish offered to pay for the use of the building, but the Weight Watcher people wouldn't accept payment. The main room seated 128 people and there were smaller rooms, one used for vesting and for confessions. while the second, smaller room was used for people to meet and talk before and after services. But that two years there was a "tryuig time for Father Bonnell because he has to "build the i church," with portable altars, and a folding confessional, bringing other necessities in each week, and tearing the church down on Sunday afternoon. Soon Weight Watchers built a cabinet for the parish to store their needs, rather than bringing them in and taking them out each week. During that two years a drive raised money for a parish center and when the time came to build the center, the question of where arose Father Bonnell said that Father Thomas Meersman, now rector of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, had bought 1.2 acres on the corner of 3650 South, but it was not large enough to build a parish. But we kept coming back to that property," Father Bonnell said, and eventually, another 3.27 acres was bought Construct Center The first building constructed was the Parish Center, containing an auditorium dividing with a folding wall the sanctuary from other activities, six classrooms, kitchen and a storage area. With that much built, we were able to operate the three main phases of parish life: worship, education and some social activity. Then in 1978, the present rectory was built and the parish has grown from 200 families to 500 families. That growth has occurred both from the phenomenal growth of the area and from converts, Father Bonnell said. Father Bonnell was ordained in Cleveland, Ohio, for the Salt Lake diocese. The idea of the priesthood had in his mind since been "lurking high school, he said. But after e work, followed by time in the Army in Korea and work on a masters degree in history at Georgetown University, Washington D C., that he decided to become a priest after prayer and reflection. The Most Rev. Duane Hunt, bishop of the Salt Lake diocese at that time, accepted the young man as a student and suggested he attend St. Marys Seminary in Baltimore, Md. He was ordained in 19fi0 and spent the next six years as an associate pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, followed by five years in Vernal and a year in Park City. Then he was given the assignment of beginning the new Granger parish. Bishop (Joseph Lennox) Federal knew I wanted to start a parish so he gave me the opportunity, Father Bonnell said. Because Father Meersman, the former chaplain at the Utah State Prison, was assigned to the Cathedral of the Madeleine, it left a vacancy in the prison ministry, and I asked Bishop Weigand for it, Father Bonnell said. He believes the change of careers will be beneficial, giving him new challenges and new interests. Having already worked as the chaplain at the Salt Lake County Detention Center, Father Bonnell believes the job will give him immediate satisfaction, because the inmates are so happy to see and talk to somebody. They are so grateful and appreciative of anything you do for them. under-graduat- also believes it will open opportunities for him to learn new things. Father Bonnell said he will miss the people of Saints Peter and Paul people he has grown to know and love, people who have been supportive and that he can rely on. I wont He admits however, miss the administrative work of the parish even though Im good at it, he said, explaining it is among the least favorite jobs he had as a parish priest. The Rev.
