Show AUTO ROAD FOR STRAIGHT CANYON From all present appearances there will be a goad summer automobile road between Orangeville and Ephraim by the latter part of next summer, making the distance between these two points tetween 30 and 35 miles and bringing to the very doors of the people of both Sanpete and Emery counties the beautiful beauti-ful camping spots in the mountains whuh.with the making of this road, will be but a couple of hours' drive by car from either side. This is very apt to be the case as a result of the designation of this route as a state highway which will make possible the spending of both forest and state road funds on this short but stubborn stub-born piece of road. Altogether it is expec ed that there will be $15,000 or SO.OjO available for expending on this road and these funds will be spent in -an effort to m ake an everlasting road as far as possible, it not being the intention in-tention to make half a road as has b en the case in the past, there not having been but small dabs of money available for work heretofore. The state road commission has suddenly sud-denly come to life in all parts of the state right recently and, co-incident viih this happy awakening, 1 word was sent down here last week urging that a delegation of Emery county men be sent half way over the mountain to meet a like delegation of Sanpete men. Uncle Ed Cox, J. frank Killian, and Jinu-3 B. Cr.-.wford composed this delegation and the first two of these j g ndemen made the tiip, Mr. Crawford lot b.ing able to accompany the others. Tr.is party met the Sanpete delegation l-.Minbosed of Chairman Mortensen of the Sanpete county commission, Mr. Is a -son, state road agent, Mr. Mays, assistant forest supervisor and Peter Pt.-rsen) and escorted to this side Jerse D. Jewkts, state treasurer and a member of the state road commission, w'.io had accompanied them up from the otiic-r side. The Sanpete delegation ti-n returned (.home, filled jam-full with t:e good results to be gained by a good road connecting these two centers of this part of the state. j Mr. Jewkes, together with the three j d .-legates named to meet the Sanpete I delegates, met with the Emery county commissioners last Tuesday and urged i- em 10 maKe application to the state road commission for the designation of tnis route as a state road. The county dmrnissioners, realizing the importance of this road to both counties decided to a;k for this designation and Clerk Pea-wck Pea-wck will accordingly so advise the state road commis ion which body will then make the designation in time for some work this fall it is thought. Practically all of the funds will likely fee spent on making a good permanent road through Straight canyon and in getting a good grade from there to the S'Jmmit, and it is likely that the north siie of the creek will be utilized for the rjaa through Straight canyon as it is thought much better results can be secured se-cured here than where the road now lies Sanpete people are every bit as anxious anxi-ous as we to get this route made a good orie, it is understood, as they are desirous de-sirous among other things of coming over this way for their coal if the trip can be made without too much hardship. The county commissioners, in company com-pany with members of the state road commission, will, within the next two or three weeks, make an inspection trip to find a more logical road route be-tween be-tween Castledale and Green River, a-oandoning a-oandoning the piece of road along Cot- j tjnwood wash on the Green River end f the present road and striking out this ! "ay from Woodside instead. Though a j ':ttle longer distance between the two ' Points by this route the road will be m:Jch more easily kept up. A good Portion of the old D. & R. G. grade would still be able to be used around tr,e south end of Cedar mountain. j |
