Show SOUNDS WARNING TO PEOPLE. Former President Taft Says Crlsii is at Hand. Salt Lake City. What was probably former President William Howard Taft's most emphatic and strongest peech on the problem of national defense de-fense since he left the White House was delivered Friday noon at the Bonneville Bon-neville club luncheon at the Newhouse hotel, when he declared that the United Unit-ed States was in a state where it may be called into war at any time "and we are fools if we do not make preparation prep-aration to meet the condition." He said that the United States must not remain in its helpless condition and that this nation must have an army nd navy strong enough so that its protests will have the necessary backing back-ing and force to' make them effective. Former President Taft told his listeners list-eners that the nation was up against a serious problem. He wanted the people of the United States to know that a crisis was at . hand, and urged them to use their influence with their representatives in congress to see that the first thing done when the national na-tional legislature convenes again is to provide tor an increase in the army and navy. He said that the United states should have a mobile army of at least 100.000 men, this number not to include the coast artillery corps and with this number be pointed out there would be only 7.-..0110 mobile troops 111 continental United States after establishing the proper forces in the Panama canal zone and other possessions where troops are required |
