Show " With the Colors" i , From Elmer and Lester Robertson of Orangevilllo. Norfolk, Va., U. S. Richmond. Dear Grandma: I guess you will think I have for-: for-: gotten you but I haven't. It Is warm out here and it takes all the life out of one. I don't feel like writing or anything else, but, if you will look 1 over it this time I will do better. Every day I have been thinking of ; you and of how good you are to us. There isn't a day goes by but what I think of my dear old grandma. Yes, 1 we received the popcorn and candy, j Believe me, It was good, too. Thanks a hundred times for it. I wish I was j home for a while to tell you how things like that are appreciated and to tell you what I know. I sure know a lot and expect to know more. Grandma, this is one good navy. We get three good meals a day, a good place to sleep, easy work, a little money twice a month enough so we can buy little things we need. Things . are so high here. Any little thing you get it costs five dollars. (Continued on Page 4) 'With the Colors'' (Continued from page 1) Believe me, there are some dishonest dishon-est people in this east. They are not like people in the west. Most of the people out here treat us like we are dogs. Believe me, I can tell them, too. I told a guy the other night he ought to go west and get his right sense. He tried to charge me 25c for a bunch of envelopes. He started to say something some-thing and I gave him a left-handed blow alongside of his eye. A cop came in and asked what was wrong and I spoke for the guy. I said, "That guy said, 'To hell w'ith Wilson.' " They put him behind the bars. This is a funny life but it's a good one. I think we will stay here the rest of our time. I would like to "go over" or go to sea, though. I went up to see about getting out and the captain cap-tain said, "Don't we treat you all-right all-right anything you want you get." Well, we do. He said that some one has got to do it, and why not YOU. Well, I know we couldn't get anything any better, but I want to go over on the other side. But I am going to do as they say. They sure like our work. All the officers tell us how good and nice we keep our boat. Well, about two hours a day is all we work, the rest of the time just ride and lay around. Don't you know I think I will ship over again. I rather like this life. If I had been in here when I was sixteen years old I would have been a better man. I would not take a drop of liquor for anything. any-thing. All a man has got to do is to to do as they say and he will get along and keep a clear record. We were made frst class seamen last Monday. Our next rate is a petty officer. of-ficer. In about six months we will get that, and after that we will get gold braid. Grandma, I could wrte all night and then not tell you all the news. It is about supper time, however, so I will close for this time. I guess my aunts will think I am dead, but I am going to write to them tomorrow. Write soon. As before, your grandsons, ELM E R and LESTER. Lots of love and best wishes. Tell everybody hello. |
