Show - ' 4x4N-ir- - 7 qt t" 1 4D The Salt Lake Tribune June 4 1990 Monday I Family Fishing Outings Spawn Lots of Fun and Lasting Memories i world could equal the Strawberry of my youth Sleeping the night before was impossible partly due to the noisy card game in the next room partly as the result of the the terrible snoring sounds created by my father and uncles and mostly because of the sheer excitement of being "one of the guys" As I recall it snowed on my first opening morning and the adults no doubt having caught enough fish to last a lifetime in previous openers elected to sleep in and avoid the frosty scene outside I couldn't stand the excitement however and crept out of the cabin holding a battered old spinning rod and my first " spinning reel (a reel I still own and can't myself to throw away despite the fact it hasn't worked in years) A few dedicated anglers stood near the spot where a creek emptied into Moon Lake casting bait or spinners from the shoreline I found a spot nearby and watching them for tips managed to land a small rainbow or two as well as a whitefish The trip was difficult though because I was still trying to learn such basic skills as tying a hook onto my line taking the hook out The night before the opening day of the fishing season was something special to a boy of 12 as he wandered the shore of Moon Lake the morning would bring 1962 and I had been invited the family gang of men who as a combination card game trip and chance to get away wondering what The year was along as part of used the opener reunion fishing from home It was my first such trip and the experience fascinated me As an innocent youngster the rough talk and good natured kidding around the card table seemed shocking But looking back is now appears as natural as the first fish rising in the morning With Strawberry Reservoir closed due to a treatment for the removal of rough fish the group of friends and family needed to find a new place to spend the opener with its old houseThe Moon Lake Lodge M - keeping cabins scenic surroundings dusty main building complete with comfortseemed like able couch and large fireplace the perfect spot for such an outing Sure the fishing wouldn't be as good as it was at Strawberry But few places in the - - - -4 '' Outdoors - ) '" n - ' S'r In the Ss - By Tom Wharton and "push-button- and - - he- Whoever caught the first fish would win the pot The game became a hilarious farce of cutthroat angling however when everyone took turns knocking fish off each other's lines before a trout could be landed There were the Fridays before openinday when we'd walk along the streams feeding Strawberry and search for the large spawning cutthroat that loomed just below the surface and dream about landing one on the reservoir i the next morning Once in my late teens I attached to my rod a Mepps spinner given to me on my birthday and began casting it into a beaver pond below Moon Lake dam Much to my surprise a trout white spinner produced another And another That was the day I decided fishing with artificials was more fun than angling with bait a lesson my own three sons have learned far more quickly than I There was an afternoon not long ago when as a novice fly fisherman I: had a chance to fish with Gean Snow one of the world's best at this particular skill We were on the Weber and after a frustrating day of few bites a small hatch of tiny snow flies appeared just above the surface - of a caught fish the proper method of putting on a nightcrawler and streamside etiquette Dad taught me some of those skills Others I learned from watching of anglers who were catching most of the fish A stranger or two courtesy I've tried to return to kids on the banks of reservoirs ever since The seeds for a lifelong love affair with both fishing and the outdoors were sewn on that first opening day so long ago On the first day of National Fishing Week many memories return of enjoyable fishing vacations Who could forget the night at Strawberry when the fishing was so good that the men all put a dollar into a pot and went out at dusk?
