Show LAW REQUIRES CREATER QUALIFICATION FOR TEACHING New teachers must have passed off successfully four years high school and in addition must pass a successful examination ex-amination in psychology, pedagogy and history of education. Any person applying apply-ing for examination in the several counties coun-ties will be required to produce evidence that they have passed four years high school or its equivalent before the priv-eltge priv-eltge will be granted. Any teacher who has not passed off the four years work and has not taught three years successfully it appears will have to give up the gun or go to sch xI. Stifi. rintendent Nelson is sending out circular letters to principals of high schools and County Superintendent, Superintend-ent, so this matter of law will not be overlooked. We are very much in sympathy with the law that raises the standard of qualification of the teacher, but we feel now that the remuneration for such teachers ought to be taken into consideration. consider-ation. How can the ' average public school teacher with a family afford to leave his home to qualify? He gets barely enough salary to keep the hungry wolf from the door during the months he is teaching, but when summer comes he either has to go out to work on some ranch to support his family or go in debt during the three summer months. If he goes to summer school, nine cases out of ten he has to barrow money and the rest of the winter has to. work to pay that back. In many of the high schools the teachers are receiving less money than the students they turn out. This state of affair is simply rotten. Let's give the beggarly teacher a chance and pay him enough to at least reward him for his sacrifices made in qualifying. |
